thenut
I already have a 360 and it's my 3rd one; 1st one dead hard drive and 2nd one looked like it was opened. Suffice it to say I thought this one would finally work out for me. I bought it late December 2006 but its manufacture date is June 2006, which I never liked to begin with. Over the last few weeks I have been getting a lot of disc read errors with Gears of War. So I exchanged my copy of Gears of War for a brand new one last night. I finally boot the new copy up tonight to play coop with a friend at my house and a few minutes in I get the little side pop up saying disc read error. Nothing was even loading, we were just making our way to the first big building where you run up the long set of stairs. Not very descriptive but you get the point. We weren't very far at all, it was just a bit after you find Alpha team dead. Anyway, I am going to exchange my current 360 for a 4th one within the next few days since I feel it isn't a disc problem as both copies of Gears of War looked like they were in perfect condition. No scratches, no smudges and no dust. My question is this, when I bring the new one home, should I try to keep my current hard drive or will the new 360 not boot with the hard drive from my current 360? I believe the hard drives have some sort of key so I'm wondering if my current one would work with a brand new 360. Additionally, will all my achievements, etc. carry over to the new 360, with or without my current hard drive? I know many things are saved to my Live account itself but can anyone think of things that won't carry over to my new 360 if I use the new hard drive and return everything from my current 360? I don't have any music or movies downloaded onto my current 360 so I'm not worried about licenses for those. Just achievements and whatnot, I guess I'll buy a memory unit to migrate my gamesaves but I want to know about achievements.

DirtyLarry Veteran Posted January 26, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 26, 2007 I don't know what to say other than it seems really crazy to me that 2 360's in a row would be screwed that bad to give you Disk Errors, so the first question in the logical sequence of events is have you tried a game other than Gears Of War? Other than that suggestion, I really would point to the disk itself being dirty before the unit. The 360 is very particular about it's disks. Tiny smudge, you can and will get a disk error. Little but of dist. Ditto. Disk error. Also another example I have is there is a product called DSkin. Great idea in premise, as it is little plastic cover you put on your disks to protect them very getting scratched that fit perfectly over the disk itself. I used them for about two weeks, but then every-time I tried a game with one of them on it, I got a Disk Error. It was usually over the tiniest little piece of dust within the disk protector itself. As soon as I took the DSkin off, no more Disk Read error. My last example is after hours of gaming sometimes my hands get sweaty. I have gone to swap out a disk, touched it with my not even that sweaty finger, and gotten a disk error. So let me suggest spending the 3-4 bucks tops to buy a micro fiber cloth at your local Target or Best Buy store. It is a cloth that safely wipes disks clean, and making sure the disk is super clean before you put it in. I have gotten quite a few Disk Errors, especially with the games I get from the GameFly rental service, however every single time I cleaned the disk with the micro fiber cloth, they went away and no more disk errors. I just cannot help but feel, especially a year into it being manufactured, even with your June console that is 7 months into the life of a console (for the record I have an original launch one from Dec 05 and still no issues) that two consoles in a row would give you problems. If it is every single game you try, then perhaps. If it is just GOW, then triple check to make sure the disk is clean. I just have to feel that the likelihood of 2 consoles being screwed is much lower than the likelihood of 2 disks being dirty, that is my humble opinion. And by dirty I mean the tiniest of smudges can give you a disk error. Perhaps I am wrong, and you just have gotten the short end of the stick, but taking the extra bit of time and the little bit of money for the micro fiber cloth could save you a lot of time and problems in the future. Good Luck. (Y)
thenut
Achievements are tied to your account. :) That's what I meant to say but I didn't just come out and say it. Achievements was the only thing I could think of for a description but I meant are there other things that I would have to redo in order to put my new 360 back to the state of my current 360? I don't know what to say other than it seems really crazy to me that 2 360's in a row would be screwed that bad to give you Disk Errors, so the first question in the logical sequence of events is have you tried a game other than Gears Of War? The first 360 didn't even boot with the hard drive attached. It was the E68 error I believe so I returned it the next afternoon. Its replacement looked as if it had been opened so I returned it that night and exchanged it for another new one. Which is the one I have now. It is the only one that has given me disc read errors. THP8 was actually scratched a bit by my 360, and nope I never moved it from its horizontal position, so I exchanged it for a new one at the same time I got my new copy of Gears. The old THP8 disc seemed to have problems playing videos after you get messages on your phone. But it never actually said disc read error. I have yet to try the new copy. It's only Gears of War that's actually saying disc read error and its only been within the last 2 weeks maybe. And it has never happened when playing multiplayer as far as I recall. Other than that suggestion, I really would point to the disk itself being dirty before the unit. The 360 is very particular about it's disks. Tiny smudge, you can and will get a disk error. Little but of dist. Ditto. Disk error. That's what I thought so I exchanged my copy for a brand new one and the very first time I played the new copy, which was an hour ago or so, it gave me a disc error. That makes me think it's my DVD drive. I haven't tried these types of protections but I have always seen them act up so I don't want to try them. From what I've seen, they have a habit of trapping things under the cover so I don't want to try them. My last example is after hours of gaming sometimes my hands get sweaty. I have gone to swap out a disk, touched it with my not even that sweaty finger, and gotten a disk error. The Gears of War DVD is always in my 360 so I haven't even touched it. :/ I have seen people say you shouldn't start the 360 or shutdown the 360 while a game is in it. I could try that but tonight was the first time I played the new copy and it still gave me a disc error. It always works after restart, it isn't a constant error but it has happened both times I went to play coop with a friend at my house, which makes me suspect the disc but the first copy as well as the new copy did it and at different points in the game. So I suspect the DVD drive. Another problem for me as I already have micro fiber cloths because I use them on my guitars. I have several unused ones that I cleaned my old copy with and it still popped up the disc error out of nowhere, after being cleaned and everything. Like I said, only my current one gave me the disc read errors. The first defective one was a dead hard drive. And don't worry, I completely understand what you're saying. I don't want to believe that my 360 is at fault but everything is pointing to it. Perhaps I am wrong, and you just have gotten the short end of the stick, but taking the extra bit of time and the little bit of money for the micro fiber cloth could save you a lot of time and problems in the future. When I bought the first one in late Dec 06, I got home to find a big E68 error on my screen. And the new one I exchanged it for looked to have been opened after I inspected it at home. So yeah, I feel as though I have had some bad luck. Good Luck. (Y) Thanks, I appreciate it. I may return it this weekend and just check the manufacture date on the new 360s in the store. This time I'll get one that was manufactured closer to the time I'm buying it instead of 6 months ago.
Rodrigo
Well... your saved games would be lost I think. But every transtaction you have done in the past will be kept tied to your account (like Arcade games, themes, etc.), just re-download the stuff. thenut
Yeah, that's what I thought. I had heard this from others. Not that I've made any transactions really, but I wanted to see if there was anything I would lose. And since achievements and my gamerscore are all tied to my gamer profile on Live, it looks like I'm good to replace this 360. I'll buy a memory unit, copy the saves to it and copy the saves to the new hard drive then return the memory unit afterwards.
FreqFace
I don't why people are saying the 360 is picky, I play alot of rentals and of course, they're not in the best of shape. Work fine though. Maybe I haven't tried a disc that's scratched enough.
thenut
Welp, I'm gonna keep playing my games until Sunday. I'll clean them off every time I use them and inspect them for scratches and smudges even though nothing has shown up yet. If I get another disc read error by Sunday, I'm just going to exchange it for a new one.
+Mystic MVC Posted January 27, 2007 MVC Share Posted January 27, 2007 Wow thenut. I got my 360 in December too and guess what, it was the same issue as your first one too (a harddrive failure). I am on my 2nd one, but haven't had any problems yet, so keep trying. Good luck!
golazo
I've never had a disk error yet and i'm usually leaving them out of their cases and stuff (lazy, yes i know :p)
thenut
I'll give this 360 a bit more time I suppose. I have until March to exchange it for a new one or return it for a refund. If it acts up too much between now and then I'll grab a new one with a much newer manufacture date.

Liam
friend of mine is having the same problems with my copy of GOW at the moment, i borrowed him it , and it wont work on his console, but he's since took it to another friends house where it works fine, i think some of the drives must be picky :s
Nashy
I got mine in March (Australia) and have never seen that error. Mine often get dusty too... weird?
MMaster23
i bought mine april 06 .. had a few errors .. one day it locked up 3x in a row playing various games (demo from HDD and DVDs).. rang them "it crashed a couple times in a row? -yup it did ... - ah i see .. because 3 LOCKUPS IN 24 HOURS COULD BE NORMAL (??!!??) - err say what?" they replaced my 360 console. i connected the HDD to my PC, and made backups of 2 savegames, wiped the rest. once the new console was in, i had a fresh start. installed and formatted the HDD to it's orginal state. connected it back to my pc and replace my savegames back. haven't had a problem since
thenut
Like I said, I'm going to give it more time. I'll wait to replace it closer to the end of my 90 day policy. If it doesn't mess up as much as it used to, I'll have to attribute the problem to a dirty disc because I clean every game before I use it now. Shadrack
Anyway, I am going to exchange my current 360 for a 4th one within the next few days since I feel it isn't a disc problem as both copies of Gears of War looked like they were in perfect condition. No scratches, no smudges and no dust. When I got Dead Rising for the first time i was having a lot of disc error right off the bat. I exchanged it, and during the exchange the clerk inspected the disc and said, "this disc is pristine." I said that I knew it was, but I was still getting disc read errors and none of my other games are doing it and I would just like to try another copy of the game because I don't think it is my console. He exchanged it with another copy and I've never had a problem with the new disc.
