More media on Xbox 360?

Recommended Posts

My buddy recently got a Wii. I had never played around with one. I still find the legless freaks in the Wii Sports Baseball EXTREMELY juvenile... but I will get to the question :)

We messed around with the Wii Weather thing and I was blown away. That thing was AMAZING! Very well implemented and very cool. Can the 360 do things like this? I do not think this is a big deal because the media capabilities of the 360 beat the crap out of the Wii, but... the weather is pretty darn cool.

Ok... you know how on the 360 dashboard you have all the links you can click on? Wii has something similar. They call them Wii channels. One of them is called Forecast Channel and what it does is that it shows a picture of the planet (taken from NASA) and then shows weather by location! You can drag around the globe, click on a city and see what the weather is like. They have sound effects... if it is raining you hear rain and there is background music kind of like what they play in airlines before take off... It is just very well implemented. Is this detailed enough?

No- the weather and news channels are unique to the Wii. The 360 can't do it.

What the 360 can do media-wise is pretty impressive, still: downloading movies, TV shows, game demos, etc. etc.

To be clear... the 360 certainly could do something like that, either as a future update / downloadable, or possibly even as a third-party tool built with XNA if they add network support to XNA in the future.

So what you're saying is... that'll definately happen! Great, can't wait! Thanks!

I had a wii and sold it on eBay to get my 360. The weather thing is NOT as good as it initially looks.

In fact, MANY times the weather was off by 10 to 20 degrees and the forcasts were usually way off. (At leaset in my area - eastern US).

The interface was VERY well done and it had a big wow factor... at least until I relised that the info it was providing was untimately useless.

That does sound really cool. I would be happier if MS made a decent RSS reader for the 360... that would be overall more useful for me. I could get the weather through that...although there wouldn't be neat 3d graphics and sounds.

Interesting... I will try to see if the weather is really accurate or not.

Meanwhile, I found something called MCE Weather that apparently works with the 360, but I couldn't figure out how and the software was not that impressive on my XP. Maybe it is better with Media Center?

Just search google for MCE Weather and you'll know what I am talking about

A Vista Sidebar on the 360 would be nice to :D ( user made gadgets ftw )
