Rewards coming for Xbox 360 achievements?

Source: Xbox fan site Unscripted 360, which picked up on a "partially torn document."

The official story: Microsoft rep--"We have nothing to say about these rumors or speculation."

What we heard: One of the more surprising innovations from Microsoft's Xbox 360 was the incorporation of achievement points into gameplay. By accomplishing certain tasks in Xbox 360 games, players are awarded points that are amassed into a personal GamerScore, which spans all Xbox 360 games. The phenomenon has created "achievement point ######," friendly competition, a cash-for-points business, and a cutthroat race to the top of the leaderboards.

However, when all is said and done, achievement points amount to nothing but bragging rights among the geek elite. That's all about to change, if a post from Xbox 360 fan site Unscripted 360 is correct.

The Web site claims to have gotten hold of "a partially torn document" that gives information on an upcoming achievements-for-rewards program. According to the blog post, Microsoft has teamed up with some sponsors that would give a limited number of real-world prizes for in-game goals. The program will be free, requiring registration only, and will launch next month, according to the blog.

As far as credibility, the owner of the blog, who goes by the name DeaconBlade 360, is an Xbox Ambassador and was awarded the Microsoft MVP Award for 2007 in the Xbox category. He also adds a bit of drama to the post, saying, "I, along with a few others, are risking quite a bit bringing this explosive story to you!"

Microsoft isn't saying much about the program but did give a hint that it is at least thinking about it. "We have nothing to say about these rumors or speculation," a Microsoft representative told GameSpot. "However, what we can tell you is that Xbox is always exploring ideas for how we can reward our loyal customers. As soon as we have anything new to share, we will definitely let you know."

With the success of achievement points catching many off guard, it wouldn't be surprising if Microsoft were looking to cash in on them somehow, and a rewards program makes perfect sense. By signing on sponsors looking to tap the gamer demographic, Microsoft could find another easy source of income for little investment. The only question that remains is "What kind of schwag are we talking about for prizes?"

Bogus or not bogus?: Sounds not bogus, but definitely not confirmed...yet.

will be interesting to see how this pans out, i wonder if it will be like a ticket method where you cash your points in, but that sorta defeats the purpose off acheivements as you want to have a high number...

yeah i thought gamerscores were redeemable before actually getting my 360. i doubt this is on the cards tho...probably certain awards will be tied to all kinds of bonus rewards like a Doraemon plush toy or something...

And when I first got my Xbox 360 I thought the gamerscore was MS Points, lmao, so I went, "man this is awsome, I just gotta beat GoW and I can "purchase" some arcade games for free" xD

I don't know if it's a good idea.

I am pretty sure that, if you get rewards, the Gamer Score system will be abused. There will be 'I'll scratch your back, you scratch mine' agreements between players and the whole system

will fall apart making the achievements worthless:

Q: "Oh, you got the Head Hunter achievements in LP-EC??" (Head shot 50 enemies in online battle)

A: "Yeah: I spent one hour with a friend head-shoting each other on a private game"

heh heh vykranth as for your sample scenario those things are happening already all the time. i don't think there's going to be too much abuse of the system, frankly because pulling tricks like that is just too boring and a lot of annoying work.

i too thought like blackshadow, that gamerscores were supposed to be like MS points, but they won't

Please don't turn this thread into another homosexual orgy.. without including me!

I'd like to see Gamerscore points redeemable as MS points. But I can't see that happening unless they either a) Up the cost of stuff like arcade games, or b) Lower the value of the achievement points and make them more difficult to attain.

Both are highly unlikely.

if this happens people are gonna abuse it and undeservedly get rewards.

Spartan has that effect on threads.

It could get really competitive and is a good idea for Microsoft to promote the x360 and its games. Just make a drawing for people who unlock more then 1000gp in a single weekend or something. That would be really tough and involve lots of caffeine.

Anyway, I think that the gamepoint system is very smart. Although, I'd like to know if there is anyway to hide particular games from your other people. For instance, I don't want my sister to know how many gamepoints I have in Dead or Alive XTreme 2 :p...for instance :D.

Uhhhhmm, that already happens. Though it'd increase if prizes were involved.

Sure, it already happens. Adding prizes for Gamer Score points is just an incentive to organize more game sessions like the example I gave earlier.

I have some pride after I got the Insane Mode achievements of Gears of War playing it solo (OK, may be after the 186th try but I still got them )
