X360 DVD Playback Seriously Flawed

DVD Movie Flaws

Pitiful Xbox 360 playback performance isn't reserved for the HQV benchmark: That's just the easiest, most scientific way to clearly demonstrate them. Here are just a few examples of the problems we have found in real, everyday, bought-in-a-store DVDs.

The 360 has a problem with many animated DVD menus. It seems to get stuck on the still parts of the image and get locked into the wrong de-interlacing mode, or it doesn't properly detect the cadence of the menu screen at all. On some discs it's fine, on others it's a jagged mess. Sin City is a good example. The following closeup clearly shows the problem. The word boxes look fine, but the moving part of the image?the bullet and so on?is a mess.

Here's a close-up look at the THX logo animation that plays at the start of Finding Nemo. Take a look at the can. If you're familiar with this animation and want to see another big display error, look at the wire near the animation's end. It's full of interlacing artifacts.

This image is a close-up of the angels that fly upward on the title screen to the classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The interlacing artifacts (jaggies) in the Xbox 360 screen are clearly visible.

i dont use the 360 for that.

for that matter, I dont use my dvd player anymore. I hook up my laptop to the vga port on the TV. That is the best DVD resolution you are going to get.

Uh.. I use my 360 to view films (over VGA) upscaled to 1366x768.. And it looks incredible. So I'm really not sure where this is coming from?

I still do and I agree, it looks fantastic

i'd be exstatic if it could be better though

Same here. My 360 looks even better than my dedicated DVD player, and I've never had any movies that were "unwatchable" like the reviewers did.

using VGA cable solves these problems...this article is retarded. They should put up some pics via VGA where the xbox upscales to 1080p, then do a comparison :D

Very much agreed 100%. Over VGA the image looks great and I've been nothing but over-satisfied with the DVD playback capabilities of the x360! Not sure about component or composite.

lol ragnarok good one. yes, i never notice serious problems with playing DVD's save for the volume being so freakin low in the headphones.

it's true certain titles have artifacts. check out United States of Leland for an example. on my machine it almost looked like LA was snowing! but a minor thing, and 99 percent of movies play great.

I watch my DVDs over Component and have never had any problems. The Xbox 360 does a fantastic job.

same here. never saw any issues. not saying they were not definitely there, but i am saying i did not notice them if they were.

As many have pointed out, it's quite obvious that the article was basically written just to generate some traffic to the site. What is 'flawed' is this article. They obviously used Component out and compared it's DVD playback to a high-end DVD player that obviously upscaled. Had they used VGA output on the 360 one would hardly see a difference.

Im just the news man... i looked at the pictures and the article looked worthwhile to be posted.

i think DVD's look pretty good via VGA, but then again i've never seen them hooked up to anything else.

since i would never use my xbox for dvd playback(hd-dvd not included here) this is a non-issue... and imo people who are that crazy over details should have a dedicated upscaling dvd player... the college kid who doesnt have a big setup or the people who dont have room are not going to be that picky over some detail such as this..... upscaling dvd players are so cheap these days this is a non-issue
