Xbox 360 Media Extender on Vista Home Premium

Recommended Posts

So I configured my Xbox 360 to go along with my Windows Vista Home Premium running off my laptop, and oh my...What have I been missing with the "Sharing" feature in Windows Media Player is just astonishing.

I mean the free streaming content is amazing and the visuals of media center are just awesome, I can't complain even on SDTV it looks NICE!

All day now I've been playing music through the Xbox 360 and doing stuff around the house, its great, I love it!

If you haven't played around with MCE and Xbox 360 then you should, its worth doing so...specially with the Vista version =D.

Just wondering though, why couldn't Microsoft implement this into the Xbox 360 rather than require people to use their media center OS? I mean yes, they want to make MONAY!! but it too easy for them to "leave" out.

Alright now I just sound like a fanboy after this post ^^ :shiftyninja:

Because, the 20GB hard drive is not sufficient to have media on. Plus, you would need to transfer the media somehow to the 360 anyways. The easier way would to have it hook up to the computer and extend that way. Since most people have their media on their computer set up in Media Player/Center so it's just more convenient than having a duplicate on the 360 which just doesn't have the space. I'm not sure the specifics, it's possible that it wouldn't work as well to have Media Center fully installed on the 360, it may require more of the Windows elements to work.

I have a question if I may, if I have a couple of mms streams that I watch on the laptop... can they be seen through the Xbox ??? or only files that are on the HDD of the laptop can be streamed?

ive been doing this since day 1 with the 360 and a media center pc. and now i cant live without it. whenever my computer goes down so does my tv and entertainment. ive tried the vista beta and its media center is much nicer looking compared to the old one and is much faster. it also takes up less resources on the host pc. all in all this is the only reason i am upgrading to vista.

For some reason a lot of people only think you can watch recorded tv shows on your xbox, but you can actually watch live tv. I've been thinking about getting a good atsc tuner for my pc, becuase my analog tuner really sucks even thought i payed like $130 for it.

Is it possible to have a xvid file in the computer and stream it to the xbox360 to watch it on the tv?

I searched relatively enough and couldn?t find a complete list of features of using the xbox360 with a mce pc. Does someone know where could I find this?

You need additional software to stream Xvid files from MCE

You can use Transcode360 or Encode360 or TVersity.

Highly recommended.

+1 a great program, the only downside that I had was that you have to watch a film all the way through to the end before you can ues the fast forward and rewind options, unless i'm doing something wrong

If I heard correctly you actually get the Ultimate version when you buy any copy of Vista you just have to pay to unlock the different elements. Sounds kinda like EA LOL
