The Myth that is the iPhone

Recommended Posts

I cannot believe the hype this overpriced hunk of nothing is getting. Really what is it and what does it provide that is so great compared to other phones?

The answer is nothing. It plays music, so do most other phones on the market. It surfs the net, well my PPC 6700 has been doing that long before the iphone with full color graphics and all. It makes phone calls, I have a bag sitting in my basement that does that very thing, and in fact does it better than most of the current phones on the market, of course the downside to the bag phone is size, but none the less nothing ground breaking.

The only thing this phone has over current pocket pc phones and Treo's is it has 8 GB of onboard storage, but that also comes at quite a high price (combined with the slowest cellular net access).

My PPC 6700 cost me $150, Add another $25 for the 1 Gig Mini SD Card and for $175 I got a phone that does everything the Iphone will do plus a lot more. And the best part is there is plenty of third party software available for Windows Mobile and for free, Steve Jobs has made it clear that out of fear of crashing Cingular's network (that statement is either a complete lie on Jobs part or an indication on how poorly built the OS is on the phone) no third party software will be available without it going through apple (which means Jobs will sell it to you for a premium price).

This phone is clearly just another smoke and mirrors job by apple to get all the technology inept people to buy a substandard product at an inflated price, but it will sell because there are a lot of idiots out there who do not know what they are buying.

Bah. My phone makes calls. It receives them, too!

I don't have a camera on it. I don't have multimedia features.

Maybe I should start a thread how camera phones are waste of money. Who wants PDA in their phone? Or an MP3 player? Or camera?

Oh! Some people do.

I guess there is your answer.

^ Yes, but I think the OP's point is:

> All of the iPhone's features are available for less elsewhere

Have you ever seen the video of the guy resizing a photo on that thing with just two fingers?! IT'S AWESOME!

yes, but why would i want to resize photos on a phone? the screen is already small enough

I agree with the point you are trying to make, but I think you forgot to mention that iPhone plays videos. Other than you are absolutely right. I would not pay more than $100.00 for a phone. I am using LG VX8600 from Verizon. I bought two of those for $160.00 and 2 microSD cards (1gb each) for $30.00. I have two phones that does everything that iphone would (except for the videos, that you would have to buy from verizon (not too sure about this)) for less than $200.00. I cannot justify $500.00 price tag for a phone.

PPC 6700 FTW! :D I have to agree with this as well, using Sprint as my carrier, I only pay $5 a month (plus my monthly plan) for unlimited internet access though my phone - that *includes* using the phone as a usb or bluetooth modem for my laptop! I also have a 1GB SD mini card (can get it larger too). It has bluetooth and wireless built in - so for GPS I just have a bluetooth gps receiver and I am all set. I got all of this for about $250. I don't know why I'd pay twice as much for something that has less...

My only complaint is that the phone uses CDMA only.

windows mobile has wmp mobile installed, so it plays a lot of different media files (audio and video). If you don't like wmp you can install another media player ;)

I agree, i see nothing on that phone that's worth looking at.

i'll be getting the 8525 in two weeks anyway.. does the iphone have 3G? no... does it have GPS? no... Does it have a memory slot? no...

So, am i paying $500 to resize pictures with two fingers?

It'll sell because of the appearance and Apple's incredible ability to market anything, including dog sh**. I think calling people who will buy it "idiots" is a bit harsh and over the top but you are quite right that they do not know what they are buying; there are so many more options available.

That is true mark - But why get them at overprice?
Overprice?

I guess that you would have to develop a list of features, then assign a value to them. And that is where it instantly becomes subjective. What do you value MP3 playback at? Or picture/video features?

Probably not the same that I do. And not the same as other people.

For me, yes, the iPhone is "overpriced". For others, maybe not. I don't see the need of a thread to complain that some individual thinks it is overpriced. Just tends to attract trolls. :ermm:

All features? All together? Implemented the same way?

Seems like an argument to discuss Lexus vs. Ford. Or Windows vs. Linux. Different feature sets. Different implementations and styling. Different values for different individuals.

My HTC Tytn wipes the floor with the iPhone in terms of functionality. They're not even including Java ME. Sorry, but if I can't code for it it ain't worth the money.

Obviously didn't see when he showed it off at MacWorld. I've never seen something so fast, easy and packed full of useful sutff as the iPhone.

Then you aren't looking too hard.

I can imagine the possabilities of the thing with the ability to develop apps for it.. but without.. well..

Just imagine. the whole screen containing an image of a gameboy whilst using the device as an actual gameboy, big screen, and the multi-touch screen as the buttons with an image overlay..

So many possibilites, all burned.

What amazes me the most about the iPhone is this.

Did you hear ANY mention of how well it's PHONE function works?

Before I get a phone, the FIRST thing I look at is how good the

phone is. The rest is gravy.

I've got a W810i (unlocked NOT from Cingular). Before I bought

it, I looked for a phone that had GOOD reception first, THEN I looked

for one with 2.x megapixel camera, macro & auto focus.

Would I buy an iPhone? No, not because it is an Apple phone, but

because you can't "customize" it. No removable memory, more than

likely there are a lot of "lock down" things.

As we get closer to a release, hopefully the price comes down, and

the features aren't quite so locked. But, given the proprietary nature

of Apple computers, I doubt it.
