Epic: 360 and PC players will go head to head in UT3

The Live network also makes it not a trivial task to make it integrate with the open network of the PC and the PS3. Were very interested to see how Shadowrun does it and if people will want that. As a consumer of games myself, with Battlestations: Midway Ill violate my rule, because I really love Battlestations: Midway. Theres a great PC version and theres a great 360 version, but I want to play with the biggest number of players. I want the biggest server pool. I dont want to have to decide and artificially split my audience between the two. Im going to go where the bigger audience is. With UT, I dont want to have the PC players to play with just half of the UT players just because of the platform. Theres a real motivation to make it interchangeable with one big pool of servers out there that everybody can play in. If I can have a hundred servers with great ping to me by having all those servers shared, thats really compelling to me. Oftentimes, youll see something like Battlefront 2, which is another game I love - there are much more players on Xbox, more servers, than there ever were on PC. As a player, I want to play better servers with more people.
For the most part, theyre the same gameplay. What I like about PC games is I like high-resolution graphics, multiplayer and fast action, and damn if the new generation of consoles dont allow us to do all three of those. If youre into graphics, the Xbox can deliver just like the PC can, and multiplayer is so ubiquitous now that youre able to get that same experience. If youre about good games, theres no contest between the two systems. Theyre all giving you the same experience.

I think this was the whole idea from the start with Xbox Live Anywhere, or Live Anywhere, whatever they call it. I can see more 360 and PC multiplayer going on, but if they let the PS3 in or not is a different story. They might not, this being MS's network (Xbox Live), but we'll have to see how it plays out.

Excellent! Another reason to buy UTIII. I haven't seen cross-console gaming since NFS Underground, when they allowed you to play between PS2 and PC gamers.

That will not happen. Honestly the ps3 user gets "left out in the cold" on this one, Live! anywhere doesn't include support for the ps3.

I still have yet to decide on the PC or 360 version... hmmm.

damn, they better release an update for keyboard+mouse for the 360, cause theres gonna be some major ownage from the pc camp...

i know a console is a console....but in all reality we all know a mouse is where it is at for aiming...

mic abusing kiddies rejoice. You can now not only annoy console users, but pc users too.

and before you flame me. No, i'm not against consoles. i'm against having to deal with the stupidity of alot of the children that play on them.

yep thats the only reason i can see this being a bad issue!

As long as there's "PC Only" and "360 Only" options it sounds like a good idea.

well this would solve it i guess :)

i understand completely where you are coming from, i play GoW alot and so many times have their been 12yo's constantly moaning or abusing other players in the game!

How will servers work? In all xbox games I've seen it seems to be that a someone sets up a room, people join it and then a game begins. I really hate room based online play like this, mainly because of my experience with (predominantly in RTS games) people leaving the game. Will there be a more normal PC style online which the 360 users can join, like a server running the matches and people can come and go as they please. . . *prays*

Everyone's saying that PC players will have the advantage, but I reckon that with aim helping on the 360 it'll either be even or to the benefit of 360 players.

Personally, I don't care either way, I'm be more bothered about all the 14 year old idiots screaming down the mic something about black people in order to sound big and important. But you get that with both Halo 2 and CSS, so what else is new.

Damn. Damn. Not sure how much crack they are smoking over at Epic, I am assuming tons due to the success of Gears.

I just cannot see how this is a good thing.

Now keep in mind I have barely touched my PC for gaming in close to a year thanks to the 360, it has taken over my gaming world for all practical purposes.

However I did nothing but game on my PC for close to 4 years straight, and there is no way anyone can tell me the keyboard and mouse is not the best way to play an FPS.

Sure, I have gotten more than used to playing them on a 360, but there is no way a controller gives me even half of the accuracy that using a keyboard/mouse combo does.

Not only that, but as others have mentioned the console camp is a different breed indeed... There are annoying 12 year olds talking smack in every popular game out there, and they have more or less ruined Gears Of War for me as they are abundant and almost impossible to not run into.

We will see how it works. If anyone where to try it it would be Epic, I have nothing but respect for them as developers and I respect their decision to try this, just really not sure that it can work out.

So does this mean MP will be Live only? Or can we still setup dedicated servers as before?

No, it means MP is PC only.

But, it would be nice, like you suggested, to have the option to setup platform specific servers. Who knows, Epic does cater more to gamers than any other company lately. Maybe they'll put the option in there.

Ugh...

Yeah this a great idea... keeps all the newbs off the PC version. ;D

But honestly, what kind of crack is Epic on here? I guess Gears of War really got to their heads... the xbox360 players are going to have no chance against anyone moderately good with a mouse and keyboard. Not only that, custom keybinds, scripts, ability to change graphics for sake of having gameplay advantage, forcing models, using custom skins, all that, its just an insane advantage. So go ahead and twiddle your thumbs in front of your fancy HDTV's, 360 owners, while I frag you faster than you can turn around with my PC. =P (Assuming that Epic doesnt decide to handicap anything on the PC for sake of consoles.)

When I thought about this, it occurred to me that live and PC server stuff works quite differently.

What I mean is, in live you just join a server together with your friends, wheras on a PC you can set up a dedicated server and play how you like.

Sure, you can usually host a game without a dedicated server (probably how 360 games work) but for UT especially, there's nothing quite like having your own dedicated server. But how would that integrate into Live? Will you be able to join an outside, dedicated server from a server browser? I thought Microsoft discouraged that to the point where they only let EA handle their own servers.

If that's the case, then it's most likely that 360 players will be playing on servers provided by Epic, while PC players will be able to play on Dedicated external servers as well as the 360 servers. Expect to see a long list of servers with names like "[Live] Epic European DM Server 1" or some such.

And once again, I can't help but stress that Epic have been making FPS's for years and years, it stands to reason that they'll know full well about the advantages of a mouse and keyboard over a controller and will no doubt balance it with aim helping for 360 owners. Either way, stop complaining about who's going to have an advantage unless you actually play it.

Yep, I totally agree with you. I myself was also an avid PC gamer but haven't really touch the PC much, except for guild wars, for the last year and a half. Now if EPIC gives us an option to choose if we want to game with PC gamer or 360 gamers only that would be great. That way you can always have a choice of sticking with a 360 crowd.

Now on another note, as you said, kids have become a real menace on the 360 MP gaming, especially on GoW. I pretty much have stopped playing it just because you always get stuck with a little punk who wants to be black, or a gangster or hates everyone so he trash talks all through out the game. Now I know I can mute him out, but still it's just an annoyance.

I hope they can make a better use of the rating system so that they can separate those people from the rest of the 360 gaming community, and in that way they can trash talk into their on little world.

Overall I am excited about UT3 and cant wait to get it. I had a great time playing UT2k4on my PC.

Maybe you should ask the thousands of people that have played Halo 2 Vista that all seem to be saying it makes no difference whether they're using K+M or a Controller. Bungie seems to have figured out a way to make it fair, and I'm willing to bet Epic is hard at work on a way to do so for this game.

Yeah K and M gaming is way better for FPS games, but EPIC might even up the advantage that PC gamers have by making auto aim better for the 360 gamer, and thus eliminate the need for precise aiming.

OBVIOUSLY! We are talking about Epic here, they have been creating the Unreal Tournament series for years so I'm pretty sure they know how the PC gaming community works and how they can eliminate the advantage. :)
