Your links and other settings are stored in (assuming Windows here):

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\

It could very well be you are having file corruption issues, but I have not seen this using Firefox in Linux or Windows.

IE, especially IE7, is a horrible browser. I still have no idea why people like version 7, it's slow and the UI is terrible.

@OP: it's a file corruption issue. FF went nuts for me too, and once I uninstalled and then reinstalled, it hasn't happened since. Opera is a great browser too, good choice.

I suspect your localstore.rdf has become corrupt loosing your search engines, bookmarks, in which case

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Toolbar_customiz...eset_on_startup

But if that's not it..

Firefox might have made a new profile for you for some reason. Change it back to the old one with

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_manager

Or just your bookmarks have gone fishcake, so get them back with

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks

Oh god... That site was spammed here a while ago, its creator/promoter (he went under many aliases) has been banned from several sites.

That site cherry-picks absurd statements (like "Firefox is bug free") and "proves" them false.

A worthless site. Look at the products and evaluate them for yourself, based on merits - not what some random lunatic posts in a forum that states "Firefox was handed to earth by an advanced race of aliens".

EDIT: It seems his site still makes the absurd claim that:
