X-Box (1) Modding

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I decided to go back in console world after left it in 2003 due to the pre-mature Dreamcast death. I have brought my brother X-Box because it was cheap and the X-Box was the best option for me because of the modding power. So basically I want to mod it to be able to turn it into a media center (with XBMC of course) I want to be able to run backup of games (It the second time I buy Time Splitter 3), and if I can installing a linux or something that would permit me to play emulators (My brother saw a friend play Mario on a XBox...).

The problem, I don't know anything to Xbox and modding stuff (This suck since I'm a computer hardware guru). I don't care to open it, I don't have any warranty for it BUT I don't want to scrap it.

Since my XBox as been built on the 2005-05-31 I bet it's a 1.6b version.

I have contacted a guy that would, for $40 CAD, "soft"mod my X-Box to do all what I want like if it was a modchip.

And for another $10 he will install another HDD (Max 200GB he said) if I bring him an HDD.

Question is, does I get ripped of for this? "Soft"mod for me mean BIOS flash or something like this, I don't believe that it worth $40 but sure, it's cheaper than a chip + solderless adapter.

What do you think guys?

i dont have time for a proper reply, but I will come back after class and clue you in, but you don't need to run linux to run emulators. They make native emulators for the xbox for SNES, NES, Genesis, GBA and all the rest that run just like a game would from XBMC, then you select mario or sonic.

After owning 2 modded xbox's you do not want to soft mod. While its a cheap solution there are ways to deactivate the mod, or create future problems. You are better off looking into hardware mods such as X-ecuter 2. These chips will open up the xbox as far as it can go. It will give you all the options you want and run well.

I highly recommend looking into X-ecuter 3 chips since they offer next generation technologies.

If you want to soft-mod it, you'll find everything you need on xbox-scene. Just google for the URL. Don't know if I'm allowed to post it here.

I'd recommend a modchip though, I got one a few weeks ago, was very easy to install (get a solderless adapter), and never regretted it. It was well worth my money. Instead of gathering dust, my xbox is on again almost 24/7. Absolutely love it with Xbox Media Center.

If there's anything else I can help you with, don't hesitate to PM. We can go a bit more in detail there, 'cause I'm not sure what exactly is allowed on here.

My Xbox is on soft mod and I installed a 400GB hard disk into my Xbox. No problems so far, if XBMC gets corrupted I just re-upload XBMC and it's back to normal.

You can play Xbox Live with your originals, as long you register before the mod.

I will not pay for X-Box Live. NO WAY. X-360 as free online service that seems to do more than the paid system on the Xbox. So don't worry for the Live thing.

I don't know what's legal or not, but I promise that I won't play pirated games. The fun thing on the consoles world is there no CD-Keys, so you can buy used games very cheap and resell games for rebate on other games. There no reasons to pirate games on a console then :) .

So guys you recommends Xecuter 3 CE + 1.6 Xapt3R Package (Hugh $100CAD :pinch: ) ?

Does I can install this by myself without worries to scrap something?

Btw, anyone tested XBox skins? I'm looking on Carbon skin, would be nice...

I softmoded mine with a 120g seagate, it used to be a hardmod (modchip) but the chip eventually stopped working (never found out why, it was an xecuter 2.6). After playing without a modchip i realized the posibility of softmoding, and rented 007 agent under fire and used my action replay to transfer the save via memory card. I think modchips are more risky than softmoding, since it requires soldering or messing with the motherboard. with the softmod u just rent 007 agent under fire, mechassault or splinter cell and download the gamesave to install it on the pc, and install it on ur box. there is more detailed information around on a how to softmod. google searching or xbox-scene will bring up tutorials and where to get files.

I have an Xecuter 3 modded xbox with a 120gb harddrive and an LCD screen on it, but you really dont need a chip a softmod will work just as good.

Just get your self a copy if 007 Agent Under Fire (or another exploitable game) and a memory card you can put the an exploit on.

Then load the game and install the exploit from there, it will take you about 10 mins to do and u wornt have to open ur xbox up.

Ive modded quite a few xboxs for my mates this way to put xbmc on and they have never had any probs with it.

Xbox-scene.com has some good guids but if you want any help feel free to ask!

if you are not familiar with soddering/opening up an xbox... id say go the easy route and do a soft mod.... all you need is a original version of Splinter Cell(i picked up for 2.99 at ebgames) and an Action Replay Max with memory card(i picked up for $24.99 at ebgames)... got the files on i needed from xboxscene and was done modding in about 10 min... FTP XBMC and all my rom/emulators and i was good to go.... didnt need the HD space since i stream all my movies over the network...

Ok, softmodding look nice, maybe not good as a chip, but if it do the job and cost fairly less.

I will look tomorrow for a game (007 or Mech, Splinter doesn't interest me at all).

I just hope to see a Action Replay thing...

But what will happend once I will have softmoded it? What I will have to do to lunch a normal game or the XBMC?

it would boot into the evolutionX dash.... from there you can select applications - XBMC(or you can boot right to xbmc)... also from the main menu there is an option for MS Dash.... or you can just boot with the disk in the drive...
