Shadrack's XBox 360

Recommended Posts

Looks like I'll be spending some quality time with XBox support people tomorrow.

I had just started a DVD past the menu and the video got scrambled, horrible noise came out of speakers, and the horrid 3-red lights started flashing.

Pretty much tried what I could (unplugged everything and just plugged in what was essential). Sometimes it gets to the XBox logo, but the video gets scrambled and it stops w/ 3 red lights.

Hadn't even been on all day  .

I really thought it would make it past the 1 year mark, so I guess I can still get repaired since MS updated its policy :).

Kinda makes up for them making shotty hardware that doesn't last even a year... but kinda not really .

Better luck with the next one I hope.

for every one xbox 360 that fails like this there are hundreds if not thousands that dont, im sorry to hear your 360 faiuled, but at least you can get it repaired / replaced by MS for free.

I just sold my 13+ month old xbox 360 to my little brother, it is still in beautifuly stable working order, i couldnt have had a better xbox 360 experience as far as reliability goes.

I had one of the early ones (second batch I think from November 2005) and that failed with-in three months. But I can say the support is excellent. Just took one phone call to MS, they sent me a UPS delivery sticker; I phoned my local depo and arranged a pickup and had a replacement in about a week.

One thing to point out though; MS will return the 360 in a plain cardboard box, so if you want to keep your original 360 box, don't send it. I used to use mine to take it round a mates house.

My replacement is still working well - no problems at all, and I use it a lot....

So I was about to call Tech Support this afternoon (didn't have time for it yesterday). Decided to check it out once more before I called them. Plugged everything in and the unit is working fine now. I'm not sure if should be happy or sad about this. If the unit is going to be spuratically defective then getting it replaced is going to a pain because as soon as it arrives the service labs they are going to think that I am full of ****.

I'll just have to play the crap out of it over this weekend and see what happens. I kind of suspect that the 3rd "earth ground" prong isn't properly wired in my house. I have some video issues with my computer since I've moved into this place as well. I need to test it.

*shrug*...*sigh*

I bet right after March the thing will crash and never come on again.

I decided to hold off till the summer of 08

Why are people so reluctant to buy a 360?

Sure, a lot of the earlier consoles have been known to brick, but 15 months down the initial problems have been fixed.

And for those waiting it out for the 'Zephyr', sigh at you..

I've been playing UT2004 and going through Half Life 2 again ;) on my PC. Was playing WoW: Burning Crusade for a little too, but I've played WoW to death so I'm already bored as hell of it (haven't made it past 62 with my paladin).

I'm not hurting for it... but I would still expect things to go quicker. I'll give them a call on Friday if I still don't have a box.

I wish I just had a lot of money.

Box arrived today and is on its way to xbox repair center somewhere in Texas. The box was shipped with 3 day shipping, and has 3 day shipping on the label to return to the facility. Then they will probably use 3 day shipping back to me with my fixed/replaced 360.

Hmmm... 9 days just in transit is kinda sad. It would have made more sense for them to set something up with UPS so all I had to do was get a number from them, bring it to a near by UPS store w/ that number and have them take care of everything. That would have knocked out 3 days of transit right there.

The support rep said that these things typically only take 7-8 days. I'm not sure if that is total, or if that does not include transit. I wonder if I press them if they will give me a free game :p.

Even though I have turned on my 360 several times in the last while, I have not played on it for over a month possibly I am no sure how much exactly, but yeah.

School and sleep puts me away from my 360, oh did I forget to mention the fact that I do not have an HDTV does not help either? :|

Sure, a lot of the earlier consoles have been known to brick, but 15 months down the initial problems have been fixed.

I certainly hope so. But a brick problem that comes up in the first 30 days doesn't bother me. Even a brick problem that comes up in the first 90 days isn't that bad. Then you know for sure it is just a dud that came off the assembly line.

You see...its the brick that happens a month shy of a full year that really bothers me. That makes me think there are engineering flaws that are not assembly line related.

To say that the initial problems have been fixed, I submit to you: how do you know they have been? Because no one has been returning them...yet? Lets see if people are still moaning about the "ring of death" near the end of this year before we jump to the conclusion that the problem is isolated to earlier consoles.

I hope you are correct.

I understand that there are some duds that come off the assembly line... and from what I've heard about MS's repair policy out of warranty it really isn't that bad. Typically $80-$150 is what I've heard which is less then 50% of the cost of the premium system.

Still...I'll be mighty ****ed off if this xbox 360 doesn't last AT LEAST 2 years.

Word to the wise: purchase the extended warranty with your xbox 360.

^ I can assure you there are still problems. I traded in my 360 for a new one a few weeks ago and that new one gave me the RROD the other night (which happened to be the day I finally went out and bought an HDTV - yeah I was ****ed). I think it was manufactured in August or September if I remember correctly.

The funny thing is that the most common problem people seem to run into is the RROD, but I've been through a few 360s already and that was the first time that has happened to me. I think I've had the worst luck with these consoles...
