0 thingsforjason
with google there's an Add URL page. under the help area. with yahoo, you have to suggest the page, and they may or may not add it. most search engines have some sort of add function to them...google for info on adding sites to search engines and you'll find loads of stuff
0 analog chainsaw
you can usually add your site via a form on the search engines page like thingsforjason said, but you can also add things like meta tags and robots.txt files for the search engine crawlers to find and index. some people may say this is a dying technique, but it's still a good idea. also, try to get as many people to link you as possible since that's a major factor of googles ranking; how important your site is (defined by links to your site) gets you higher on the page. 0 xpablo
Google doesn't use meta tags they just index your page/site I made a site for a friend and it took forever (10 weeks) to get listed on Google and then I added a hidden page to my site, I particularly didnt want this page listed on search engines and even added the "noindex" metatag, but yet 3 days later it was on Google. The ScreenSavers show on Tech TV ( http://www.thescreensavers.com ) had a segment about Search engines, they say with Google being the most popular of all Search Engines, the best way to make it near the top of Google without paying them a fee, is popularity if oyur site recieves lots of traffic it's most likely to get a higher listing on google. so trick is to get your site link from similar sites that are already listed on Google, and @ next spider crawl it will "catch" your URL and list it . Once it's on Google it will make its way to other sarch engines.

0 mlerner
If you want a helpfull tip, I have found out it is easier to get on a search engine if someone else listed has put your website link on theirs. I believe mine showed up after a popular forum had a link for my site.
