Leaked Halo 3 multiplayer ALPHA build screenshots

Recommended Posts

I can't believe you people are making graphical judgements on such crap quality pictures. And that's besides the point that this is the same Alpha version that Bungie has released much nicer looking screenshots from.

next time ill withhold any beta or alpha screens from neowin....

Maybe you shouldn't post anything if you don't care about anything but positive opinions. Doesn't matter if it's alpha or not, it looks like crap, doesn't mean that we don't appreciate you posting them. Get over yourself and relax! ;)

I understand that its alpha and still being 'built'. just doesn't seem impressive to me atm.

The halo fan boys will cry about any criticism ever made towards their precious. The whole "its only an alpha/beta crap" didn't hold up with windows vista and it won't here either :p

You're comparing an operating system vs a game? How can you justify that logic...

Better and older builds have already been pumped out.

I think MS should push the release date to Spring 08, so Bungie can really perfect this game. But business is business.

Frankie (Bungie Spokesperson on NeoGAF)

Stinkles from Bungie:

In response to the part where screen leaker said beta will be announced in 2 weeks:

Well he's dead wrong. there will be plenty of notice and PR fanfare when the date is announced, likely followed by screenshots with things like decorators, lightmaps, atmospheric effects, and about 100 other graphic features not included in this freaking ancient Alpha networking test build.

You can all make up your minds about the graphics when it ships, but doing so based on this build is somewhat absurd.

Anyway, Mods. What's your policy on hotlinking to things our lawyers are actively shutting down?

On part where someone said go easy on the screen leaker

Then he shouldn't have signed a contract saying, "Go ahead and fire me if I leak any of this shizzle"

"Decorators" are things like ferns, plants, flowers, rocks, pebbles, dust - 3D stuff that turns say, ground textures into believeably 3D ground. Valhalla, the big tree filled level, for example, is absolutely festoooned in ground cover now.

In the case of the shots here, it's all missing, because the Alpha build is very, very old.

And not designed to be screenshotted. But rather to simply test networking and be enjoyable enough to keep folks testing networking.

On how MS will determine the source of the leaker

I have determined the source of every single leaked screenshot thus far. In less than 24 hrs.

On how MS will now deal with the leaker

More time does not mean a better game. Bungie knows this.

They've had three years, and they probably all think that more time isn't going to make the game any better.

I would have thought that people on Neowin knew what ALPHA means.

ALPHA = no where near ready yet, many key pieces missing

BETA = somewhat ready, few pieces missing

RELEASE CANDIDATE = mostly ready, small bugs left

FINAL = ready, no showstopper bugs at all.

Alpha? Doesn't the beta start later this month?

Check the screens--these are from old alpha builds.

The beta later on is only for the multiplayer. (3 maps I believe)

And who knows how many versions of the beta and alpha they will have.

Guys these pics are unimpressive. On a pure polygon/effect basis it's only a tad better then Halo 2 (granted at 720p rather then 480p of Halo 2).

But these are Alpha, I've read quite a few reports Bungie has made and these multiplayer alpha tests were missing quite a bit. No HDR, lots of placeholder textures/objects, and etc. Also remember that the actual efficiency of the engine is still poor, so they had to leave quite a bit out just for it to run smoothly.

And finally, remember these multiplayer tryouts weren't about the visuals, it was a test environment to get feedback on multiplayer elements.

I remember from one of the individuals at 1up.com that when they were shown this multiplayer test, there was also a 30 second single player trailer. He described it visually as "Gears of whaaa?", meaning it's bloody insane.

So don't make any final observations based on this.

I remember seeing something where CliffyB said if they had released Gears of War 2 months prior, it would have sucked horribly and looked like crap for the most part.

We are NINE months away......

If you've read Bungie's articles, you'd know that the high-detail scenery is slowly being added in, one level at a time.

Regardless of whether these are alpha, beta, or release candidate, they were taken with a camera looking at a screen. They aren't even a good representation of the detail that IS there.

Halo - lame

I have never found halo any fun, unless your playing with your friend driving the jeep buggy around. GFX look terrible atm, cant wait to see final tho ..

Definitely nothing wrong with having that opinion.. But personally Halo was just an incredible experience from start to end. And unfortunately that's also the reason why Halo 2's campaign was a disappointment since Halo's was so bloody good.

Many devs will tell you, and many have said so in the past, that the final graphics work and final textures etc are all tossed in towards the end of the development process, first comes gameplay changes, adding new features, and any engine work needed, then testing for bugs and networking problems, in the last 2 or maybe 4 months before release, the game gets it's final textures and all the effects, which are then also tested in the last month before it goes final.

Alpha is the first stage of development where gameplay is tested. beta would be where the graphical additions are made. Alpha is the first builds that means Alpha's graphics are more than 2 years old
