IGN's Crackdown review - 8.0 score

Recommended Posts

There is a fundamental dichotomy at the core of Crackdown. This huge, streaming game, the third Grand Theft Auto-style game on Xbox 360 (after The Godfather and Saints Row), is built around simple basics: Shooting bosses and collecting orbs. So how can Crackdown, designed by Real Time Worlds and led by David Jones, the original creator of Grand Theft Auto, be so simple yet so god-damned addictive?

When you pare it down, Crackdown is built upon the most fundamental "play" principle. Just like we all discovered in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 or in Super Mario 64, Crackdown enables gamers to lose themselves completely, discarding time and priorities, hunger, and bodily functions, even ignoring natural disasters. Once you boot it up, the game's allure -- to collect orbs, jump higher and wield more powerful weapons -- will suck you in and leave you wanting more. It's called Crackdown for a reason.

Indeed.

I find it very addicting and fun. I'm usually not attracted to sandbox games. Mercenaries was the last sandbox game I really enjoyed. Personally, I've never been a huge fan of GTA.

Crackdown is bringing me back to the genre though. I know the skill progression is accelerated for the demo but I have fun just maxing my agility and strength and jumping from roof to roof and spin kicking everyone.

I think I'll be buying the game.

It's great to see the game getting the good reviews it deserves.

For obvious reasons, this game is gonna sell very well. I just hope it gets the attention of those who buy copies.

I love the game. Roll on the 23rd :D

I have to admit, I'm surprised it's getting good reviews for the simple fact I thought the Halo 3 beta invite was a ploy to sell copies of an otherwise poor game. I'm glad to see I was wrong.

thing is, though.

Crackdown was a known-about game for about 6 months before even any mention of a halo 3 beta invite.

I loved it before that, and i still do.

As do most people.

I wouldn't really call it a ploy, the game would sell well enough on its own, and theres free ways to sign up for the beta online anyway.

I think its just microsofts way of saying, merry christmas. Again.

Well deserved reviews for a great game. (Y)

I too have never really been a fan of the GTA series, but this game has me hooked. I've played the demo at least 10 times over. Each time maxing out different agilities and they are all fun in their own way. Definitely jumping is one of the most fun, but they all kick ass! Explosions are beautiful and the SUV upgraded abilities are tremendous fun. Good stuff! :D

Was expecting this game to get more than 7.8 and 8.0 and GameSpot/IGN

I wasn't, they're entirley right. It is a damn simple game, and will eventually bore you. Throwing cars at enemies, enemies at enemies, and whatever will get boring.

Remember GTA? remember how for most of you it just sits there and doesn't do anything now?

Crackdown will succumb to that pleasure, alot faster.

But, i AM getting crackdown on its release day, and i do love this game.

Still don't think it will be better than any other major releases this year though.

Well good for you. You're in a pretty good minority there, or you just don't like sandbox games (and that's also a minority :p).

I like sandbox games it just that this game didnt appeal to me. The controls (to me) are bad and the overall gameplay is just boring. It got boring real quick jumping around buildings lol To me Crackdown = GTA meets the hulk lol

Thats just my opinion.
