redscheme
which came out first firefox or opera? this is not a question of which is better ... im assuming opera came out first since its at ver 9, i just want to confirm this (pure curiosity)
Rob Veteran Posted February 13, 2007 Veteran Share Posted February 13, 2007 Aye Opera was first, by a long way. Opera: version 2.0, the first public release, came out in 1996. Firefox: version 1.0 came out in November 2004.
null_
Opera has been around for quite some time. So has Mozilla, but not Firefox itself.

halcyoncmdr
Netscape Navigator > Opera :p Don't even go there... hahaha Perhaps it would be better to compare the releases of the Mozilla Suite and Opera since Opera is more of a suite than just a browser... although Firefox is getting closer daily... Opera First Public Release: September, 1996 "2.1b1" First Stable Release: December, 1996 "2.1" Mozilla Suite First Public Release: December 7, 1998 "Preview" First Stable Release: March 19, 1999 "M3" Firefox First Public Release: September 23, 2002 "0.1" First Stable Release: September 23, 2002 "0.1" From Wikipedia, that page was easier than going to each browser itself :p

BinaryFragger
Perhaps you should follow your own advice and use Google to find out Firefox came out in 2004, not 2002. But Firefox did come out in 2002. Except it was known as Phoenix and it was a rough alpha release (version 0.1, based on Gecko 1.2b). It's actually still available for download: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/phoenix/releases/0.1/

redscheme
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Opera_Browser looking at the screen shots ... man its crazy how it went from that to what it is now.
halcyoncmdr
Firefox came out in 2004.Phoenix maybe before, but he asked about Firefox... Does it really matter what it was called? The fact is its the same browser. Just like if they were to change the name to something else now, we would all still know it was Firefox... The fact is its still the same codebase. 999
wasn't Firefox called Firebird before the lawsuit? anyways, I think that Opera is older.
Julius Caro
Opera came first, but I guess mozilla/gecko was somehow part of netscape since before opera came out
HawkMan
wasn't Firefox called Firebird before the lawsuit?anyways, I think that Opera is older.
