Broken Features and Annoyances in Vista

That happens in XP too, it's just that the error is different. Unfortunately, Explorer's messaging isn't too good at differentiating between "Access denied" because you don't have permission, and "Access Denied" because another program has locked the file. Unlike XP where it would just fail, you'll now get a "Try Again / Cancel" option. Unfortunately it still doesn't tell you which other program is locking the file, which is one of my personal pet peeves.

Yeah, I actually just found out that one of the programs I use (Newsleecher) currently has a bug that sometimes locks files or folders when it extracts them, which may be what is causing some of those problems for me. I really do wish Microsoft would add an "Unlocker" type feature into Vista though.

you do realise its quicker to use keyboard commands so pretty much all menu operations ?

i only ever use the mouse if i need to highlight a specific bookmark or link on a web page!!

What's the keyboard for "move to" and "copy to" bc i'm a keyboard person too? In XP i always end up using the menu icon to move or copy to the last location.

Other than that, if it's convenient I use the cut and past from the keyboard. But doing it multiple time can be a waste of time switching back and forth windows.

Handy keyboard shortcuts:

CTRL+X - Cut

CTRL+C - Copy

CTRL+V - Paste

Unfortunately it doesn't look like there is one for Copy To Folder or Move To Folder.

Another useful thing to know, if you select a file (or files) and shift + right-click, there will be a "Copy As Path" option in the context menu for copying the path / url of the file or folder(s). If you selected more than one, you'll get them all in a list.

Fans of Expose should check out My Expose. Works almost as well as Expose on the Mac. i only wish you could select the desktop using it.

cool thanks. I got check out :D

*edit:

Awesome! Even better then Expose bc it actually zooms into window a little bit when you mouse over. Desktop missing is no prob for me BC I alway use the WIN + D (desktop) or the WIN+M (Minimize). Works great with video too (tested with 4 google video pages)!

Bummers. Guess I won't be sorting all my porn using Vista ;)

Vista reminds me of the BMW 7 series i-Drive... taking out all the manual buttons and replacing with an "innovative" solution. Cool factor was high, but It took and average of 3-5 moves just to change volume. I like the o'l lift your arm up and turn the knob :p.

Yeah I work in the new Windows Experience division on the Find and Organize team (part of what used to be called "Windows Shell").

You and you're team have done a great job in Vista. What other surprises could there be in store for "Vienna"? No, ok don't answer that. I guess it's all about "wait and see" (Y)

One annoyance for me is when an MP3 file gets put into a folder, all the columns change in the details view to reflect that MP3. When I move the MP3 out of the folder, those columns are still there and the folder is treated like an MP3 folder. Pretty annoying that i have to go and manually change the columns and add back Size, Type, Date Modified.

I posted about this Media Player Classic not working a while ago, but was told that the issue was fixed.

I just installed Vista, but am still unable to get Media Player Classic (MPC) to work with .avi files. Anybody else have the same problem? I'm not sure if this is a divx, MPC, or Vista issue.

Since videos work fine with Videolan Player, I'm leaning toward MPC problem.

My gripe is for the picture viewer , it keeps opening a new window for every image i click, is there any tweak to make it reuse the existing window ? I don't want nor need 50 picture viewer windows open

Weird. I love that change. It always annoyed me that I couldn't open more than one picture in the old viewer (I had to open other in paint or something).

Does the phrase "ADAPT OR DIE" mean anything to you?.

I swear, these rants against Vista are become more and more anal-nee-fanboyish each day.

--ScottKin

Hey MS fanboy... you like whatever MS give you? Sure you do... because they OWN YOU.

READ the bottom of thread opening.. if you do not want to contribute to a better solution... then zip it.

Hey I know that, and I know most of the keyboard shortcuts, but sometimes, when I am slouching back in my chair, with my laptop on the table in front of me, a cigarette/beer in one hand, and the other hand using the mouse to do whatever is it I'm doing, I just don't want to use the keyboard! I just want to be able to add my own delete icon to the Explorer toolbar, damnit, so I can go keyboard-less!!!

Not a broken feature but I did notice and find it funny and sad that the Font Install dialog is still the same as it was in Windows 3.1.

Start - Run -> Fonts -> "alt" File -> Install new font

Aaah, broken record!

It's NOT USED. What's the point of wasting time updating something that is incredibly rarely seen.

That's bs :pinch:

Having to take the hand of the keyboard just to enter some stupid keyboard shortcuts is certainly not faster!

Using toolbar buttons is much more intuitive as well, and you don't have to keep all those stupid keyboard shortcuts in mind.

Also, I don't like others to dictate me how I have to do things

Another annoyance since I don't use Internet Explorer: IE decided to suddenly not load PNG images when it is not being set to "Run as Administrator".

IE.jpg

This only happens in my User account.

When you don't use IE, why would you care if it displays png images or not? IE's bad png support has been known for quite some time.

Simply use Firefox or Opera who don't have any problems with png.

Mate thats the most ridiculous comment I've read on Neowin.

Even though something is rarely used I still want it to look the same as the rest of the O/S.

Imagine if Microsoft adopted your theory. We would have traces of Win 95, 98, Me, 2000 and XP all through Vista.

UAC breaks a lot of things, especially certain installations.

Also it's really annoying and acts stupid example:

If you install Everest and you set your temperature and other info to show up as taskbar icons, and you set Everest to run at startup; Everytime you reboot system Everest gets blocked by UAC, and then you have to manually unblock it. There is no option to allow it in the future....

UAC ruins user experience, and smoothness of using the system. It pop ups like crazy and doesn't really protect you because you click continue anyway. Also it was said that prevents malicious code from execution...heck that's antivirus job to do it.

Sorry I meant to say we would have MORE traces of those other O/S's.

That's why I said it's more of an annoyance. I would prefer to have everything working right. That's all.

Would you stop posting that non-sense. UAC prompts should be extremely rare, and it DOES protect you even if you click continue. It's purpose is NOT to prevent malicious code from executing. It's purpose to prevent escalation of privileges. Clearly you have no clue what you're talking about. What the heck is Everest anyway? Sounds like some really poorly written piece of software if it's causing you that much trouble.

i don't agree with most of what the op says, but i do have a few bugs / annoyances

bug:

*) click show desktop icon in quick start

*) click flip 3d in quick start, icons from desktop are hidden

(not important tough)

annoyance:

*) copy file to a directory which already contains a file with the same filename

*) watch the do you wish to overwrite dialog appear

*) watch the (calculating dialog) appear above the do you wish to overwrite

very annoying ;)
