Help Networking 360

Recommended Posts

Okay, so i'm trying to connect my old PC running PC of XP Service Pack 2 with my Xbox 360 via 2 straight ethernet cables and an ethernet coupler inbetween.

I bought and installed a card for the old PC today and then spent all day transferring music over to it.

I've connected the cables and downloaded the appropriate programmes for the PC, but I get these errors, I have included screenshots, please try and help me because this is driving me crazy.

The Network won't connect properly because it says it cannot find the network address, Windows media Connect starts to install but ends up being non responsive :(

You've really got 2 problems.

First off, ethernet coupler? As in a hub/switch/router, or a small box with no electronics, but just designed to link two cables (like this)? They're not going to talk to each other via the latter (well, they might, but I doubt either network card supports the ability to switch to a crossover connection). How did you have it connected when you transferred the music to it?

Second, it's saying limited or no connectivity as there's nothing there to assign IP addresses to each device. Your easiest solution, for this problem is to assign both of the machines static addresses (say 192.168.5.1 for the PC and 192.168.5.2 for the xbox, both netmask 255.255.255.0)

By coupler I mean the little box yes, DAMN!

I was under the impression i did not need anything else, just two cables and a little box...

...How do I assign static IP adresses to the 2?

To transfer the music I just used my 1 gig MP4 player via usb switching and switching and switching between computers!

So you're telling me I need to buy a router or a hub? :'(

Thanks

Sorry dude, but it's either a hub/switch/router or a crossover cable, which is a special cable with the transmit/recieve wires the "wrong" way round at one end.

You might get lucky and one of the cards will support automatically switching it's port to a crossover mode, so you can use straight cables, I'd try assigning the IPs and see what happens.

In XP:-

Open contol panel

Open network connections

In network connections, find the "Local Area Connection" related to your network card, right click and "Properties"

Double click "TCP/IP Internet Protocol" in the new window and you'll get a box asking for IP settings.

Set the top box to "Use the following IP address" and enter 192.168.5.1 in the top most box and 255.255.255.0 in the one below it (you can leave the third one blank and ignore the DNS settings)

Click OK

Click OK (You may see your pc "freeze" for a second, this is normal)

On the 360:-

System Blade -> Network Settings

Edit Settings

Select the IP settings block and hit A

Select "Manual"

Select "IP Address"

Enter 192.168.5.2

Select "Network Mask"

Enter 255.255.255.0

Select Done

And that should be it, it's just a case of "it'll work or it won't" I'm afraid, if you're running any firewall on the PC, I'd turn it off just to be sure it's not blocking anything.

Best of luck

Ohh, no no no, the little box, I thought that that crossed the wires over, thus making 2 straight wires into a crossover wire?

Thanks for the tips though

The connection worked according to the PC when i assaigned the IP addresses, Thanks xD

Now WindowsMedia connect is installing, but it seems to be taking forever...:(

My Xbox now says that the Gateway Address is invalid, it's just 0.0.0.0 at the moment, isd there anything I can set that to?

Thanks so much :)
