Pentaborane
I only played the Halo 1... and can''t remember a whole lot in regards to the story line. So my question is whether or not I need to know the story behind 1 and 2 in order to understand Halo 3. Thanks.
spenser.d
You might be able to get the mere gist of it, but you'll probably need to know the storylines from the other games if you don't want to be playing with a ton of nagging questions about why things are the way they are. At that, you can probably just find the general storylines online pretty quickly. -Spenser

goji
It would be safe to say, read it online, play Halo 1 and jump into H3, there was not much of anything in the 2nd game.
sambrentnall
i was woundering this aswell i havent played halo 1 and i only realy got halo 2 for online. should i play halo 2 and then 3 or should i buy 1 first
Lingwo
Either read the story or play the first two games. Playing Halo 3 without knowing the story from the first two would be like reading the end of a really good book.

Elliott
There was a storyline in Halo 1? :s Cute little jab there. Yes, Halo 1 had a storyline. Not as developed as Halo 2's, but it was there just to introduce everything.

FreqFace
Halo 2 ended with a cliffhanger; of course you'll need to know the story, preferably by playing it, or at least reading up on it.

Usually helps when you're paying attention to what the cutscenes and voices are saying though. :p

spenser.d
You know what, I just remembered about this now. Go here: http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/cutscenes/ It's a cutscene library for both Halo and Halo 2. goji
The Ark? --- eh, foreunner tech is everywhere in the lives of the covies... ok far stretch but I will give it to you. Delta Halo? --- We already knew the existence of multiple halos before 2 shipped; boring rehash of the first game. Truth's Betrayal? --- Not really news worthy, hasn't affected the story that much, aliens vs humans still. The Elite/Brute power struggle? --- Not really important, I want to kill aliens, not sympathize with them. The Forerunner reverse technology? --- We yet again knew this, Covenant tech is based off of and on Forerunner tech. The significance of Mombasa? --- Wasn't even explained in the 2nd game, so mute point. Cortana's questionable allegiance? --- Was already felt from the first game, if you follow Bungie games you know she might go rampant. Gravemind's origins? --- Wasn't even discussed, maybe covered in the 3rd game. They only introduced him as a big player, and a turn of events I guess; One concession. Sgt Johnsons remarkable recovery? --- Once again, we knew this BEFORE 2, it was in the books. Don't know what game you were playing :| Played a game that was boring as heck, thats what it is. Recycled game and story told from the Covies perspective,... fun. H1 is vastly great in terms of a gaming experience. Online is H2 crowning achievement. stanley porkchop
The big twist in number one was the introduction of the Flood. The big twist in number two was the Elites siding with humanity. Others have already posted cutscenes, plot synopses, etc.

Some of us don't read the books, so Halo 2 was actually a big game for us. And the Elite/Brute power struggle is unimportant?
Pentaborane
Similar Question How about Graw 2... need to play Graw 1. Just checking although I doubt it.
Elliott
Similar QuestionHow about Graw 2... need to play Graw 1. Just checking although I doubt it. Nah. GRAW 2 should be just as enjoyable without playing GRAW 1, but the two storylines do somewhat tie in from what I can tell.

If you hadn't played H2, you'd be lost in Halo 3. How is the civil war unimportant? How would anyone even know the slightest idea what the Gravemind is? The Ark?
