Unlucky "Fanboy" Returns Seven Xbox 360s

By Kris Graft

San Jose Mercury News reporter Dean Takahashi chronicles the tribulations of one self-described Xbox "fanboy" who had to return seven defective Xbox 360s, only to finally be appeased by Xbox boss Peter Moore himself.

ImageThe story, in sum, goes a bit like this: Xbox fanatics Rob and Mindy Cassingham (pictured) of Moab, Utah trekked to Microsoft's Zero Hour Xbox 360 launch event in a hangar in the middle of the Mojave Desert. The two, who at the time operated a videogame center, bought four systems at the November 2005 shindig.

Long story short, all four of those systems "croaked," according to 42-year-old Rob Cassingham, with the first one dying in January 2006, just a couple months after launch. Those systems were used in the Cassingham's game center, but Rob insists that no one abused the machines.

Three other Xbox 360s for the Cassingham's personal use also failed.

Eventually, Takahashi directed Rob to Xbox head Peter Moore, who was quick to help the self-professed (perhaps now ex-) fanboy get a brand new console. (Takahashi asks that gamers with Xbox 360 problems not use him as the "go-between" to Moore.)

Rob wrote in an e-mail to Takahashi, "A new 360 was all I really wanted in the first place, but after two failed attempts dealing with Microsoft?s overseas call centers, I am very annoyed that it took an email directly to P. Moore to get results.?

In December, Microsoft upped its Xbox 360 warranty (which would provide a replacement or repair) to one year from the original 90 days. Both the PlayStation 3 and Wii have one-year warranties.

Nothing wrong with mine, but my house is continually cold because we hardly use the heater, therefore has a very low chance it'll overheat :p

I got mine only 5 months ago though, which probably rules out a defective Xbox... hopefully.

I'd bought mine 6 months ago and used it lightly. Besides the periodic hard-freeze, I had no problems with it until I got the three red lights immediately following another hard freeze a week ago. I then called support and ran through the motions and my unit is now being repaired/replaced.

It's not costing me anything except for a couple of weeks without the unit so I guess I cannot complain. I just hope it works better when I get it back because it would hard freeze fairly often (the unit was never used long enough to get beyond mildly warm).

I'm now on my 3rd console. Although to be fair when I returned the second, it was for a reason that actually turned out to be normal (yet I had never experienced with my first console).. I've kinda kept my hands off the console for the last few weeks because of it lol.. Just recently grabbed a DS so most of my time is on that.

(O/T- And the Super shows up and does nothing... :))

But back on topic, 7 consoles is a lot to go through... I bought mine from a friend who was getting rid of it... I got a great deal on it too haha ($400- Premium system, Oblivion, GoW, Play 'n Charge, RF adapter :))

You gotta admit that after 7 xboxes he does deserve the title of fanboy, and he does admit that he is one. The term should not be viewed as an insult unless the way it is used implies it. I admit that I prefer Microsoft systems over the sony and nintendo counterparts, but I owned an xbox and playstation, and now I own a 360. I might buy a PS3 if the good games I'm looking at for it don't come out for the 360... I don't really like the nintendo offerings lately though... :(

i've used more than 4 xbox 360s and have had no problems with any of them (used for many months, usually on for a few weeks at a time).. not one issue..
mind if i ask why you had to use 4 360's? just wondering... :shifty:
