Well it finally happened my 360 went blah :(

but who needs a 360 when you have the almighty PS3 and RFoM?

that's something beyond me... :|

Not for nothing and I hate the fact that we're turning this into another ps3/360 thread, but not too long ago, MS was the company with no decent games out. Hell, at launch, there wasn't too much to brag about for the 360. It takes time and I'm pretty sure Sony's history of great first and third party titles will carry over to the PS3 in time.

Either way, I'm thankful I got the 2 year replacement plan from work (Best Buy). I've already had the machine lock up on me 3 times and seeing so many "dead 360" threads and posts on Neowin reassures me it was money well spent.

I recommend everyone getting extended warranty plans for at least 2 years on top of the 1 year that MS gives you.

I just got a question, do you use it to watch DVD movies often? I know that with the PS2, if you watched DVD movies often with it, the damn drive would die out and you'd get the same sorta "reading disc" but nothing happens error, I get it with my PS2 now, but it's 5yo, and I don't use it to watch DVDs.

I think the best thing is to just use it for games, and not DVD movies as this seems to kill console dvd drives faster. My cousin used his PS2 as a DVD player alot, and went through 4 of them.

Absolutely correct. It isn't very smart using your drive for anything other then playing games. I am guilty of it, though. The XBox 360 DVD playback features are awesome IMHO. The picture quality is great too. In fact, I'm thinking of getting the HDDVD drive just so I don't wear out my main drive on regular DVDs.

Still, best to use a cheap stand along player then wear out your xbox 360 :/

Just be sure to check the bottom discs before insertions into your xbox 360, especially if the disc was rented or borrowed from a friend. One dirty disc put in your xbox 360 could be bad news.

I admit I use my 360 for my DVD playback at the moment, even tho its DVD playback is miles behind my PC's (The 360's playback is actually very poor compared to a modern DVD player) Its just so much of a pain to set my PC to output to the TV everytime I want to watch a DVD and even then I don't have a remote for my PC so I really just can't be bothered and end up using my 360. I do have an old skool DVD player sitting in the cupboard but its scart only and there's no way I'm using that with my sexy 1080p TV.

I'm also wary of spending a lot of cash on a decent upscaling DVD player(I'm an image freak) because I know high def players will take over.

I know watching DVD's on my 360 is a bad idea, but its just so easy to use :(

My 360 hasn't crashed for months, when I first got it, it crashed in Dead rising. I have also got a disc read error in GOW multiplayer once. Like I said tho its not done it for months so I've kinda left it at that.

On the subject of 360's failing I know that people who have issues with the console are more likely to post about it than those that don't but when every forum I visit has at least 10/20 posts from people crying about it, it does make you wonder. It probably doesn't help that MS just send you back a refurbished 360 console that's had its own problems which probably accounts for people who've had 3/4 360's break.

It's also depressing when I go into town and see pretty much every 360 display booth flash redlights or displaying E74. One store I went to still had it 4 weeks later, I'd no idea if it had been replaced during that time so it could have been the same console.

I love my 360 and my gaming has completely changed since I got it and I do hope that the failure's are just a few unluckly people(hense why I brought it)

Mine died a few weeks short of one year and I sent it out on Feb 13th, got a replacement today Feb 26th, 13 days later, also when I talked to the tech on the phone he said when I got it I could call up and get an extended warranty (i.e. a full year on the replacement for $25). Didn't have any problem with the tech support either, not ideal but the service was far better than what I received from other companies (I'm talking to you PNY!!!)

well, to all who have crapped out machines, don't worry, they'll get sorted. everyone else, chances are we'll be fine and if not then it ain't the end of the world.

but just like the Yamato, when they go down, they go down heavy! (sorry, Battlestations Midway is getting to me).
