S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl - GOLD

Recommended Posts

It's hard to believe, I know, but GSC's much delayed and highly expected S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl has reportedly gone gold.

Gamespot writes:

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. As the headline above indicates, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl has indeed gone gold. The announcement was made this evening by THQ executive vice president Kelly Flock at her company's Gamers' Day Event in San Francisco, which is currently being held at a nightclub in San Francisco's SoMa district.

It's been six years since Ukrainian developer GSC Game World first announced S.T.A.L.K.E.R., then called Oblivion Lost. In the intervening half-decade-plus, the game has alternatively tantalized PC gamers with its lush visuals and frustrated them with its frequent delays. GameSpot's previous coverage highlights both the ups and downs of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s long road to the factory.

Tonight, Flock said S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will "ship in March," and online retailers are listing it as having a March 20 release. The game is rated M for Mature (blood and gore, intense violence, strong language, use of alcohol), and will retail for $39.99.

So, it is coming at last.

Oh, and I promised ChicoCahill almost two years ago I would link back to this post when the game is coming out. A long time for spite, but I keep my promises :p

I remember trying the leaked Alpha; I think it was now 2 years or so ago...at least back then it had the graphics going, but today it doesn't even have that.

how many engines did this game go through?

One, they trimmed things from the original build because technology hadnt caught up yet.

I don't see why the hype should die down... this game is all you should want in a game. It's a first person shooter, a thriller/horror/suspence, it is in a creepy environment, it has RPG elements in terms of it being open ended in a developing world, the entire game is based off intelligent AI and the other STALKERS and mutated creatures fulfill their lives wherever they happen to be. AMAZING I think! The graphics still look better than a lot of new games coming out, and it has to be good after the years they have spent with it. I think this will be a quality game and I am going to put my support behind it because I think what they have done is a testament to quality game making and innovation.

Its graphics aren't nearly as impressive now, its ship has sailed like half life 2. It missed its boat unreal 3 is here and games need to step up, like crytek.

Wow, I remember all the update threads Chode used to post with cool screenshots and "secret" news. :)

Can't believe it's finally being released. But, like some others here, I don't feel as enthusiastic as I probably once would have.

Looking forward to playing this. Even if the graphics aren't quite up with some of the latest games at the moment, as long as its got the right atmosphere I'll enjoy it.

does "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." actually stand for anything or is just for dramatic affect?

It comes from the storyline involving the main character been involved in a truck accident in the zone. He is found by the dealer, who brings him back to health and starts giving him missions. The only clues to your identity are a tattoo on your arm reading "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.", and a PDA with the mission "Kill the Gunslinger". GSC have said we will learn what it means later in the game.

how many engines did this game go through?

Just the 1, GSC's own "X-Ray" engine. Though it has two renderers: DirectX8 and DirectX9.

"Mutants" trailer, the last official released trailer from about a week ago. The DirectX9 renderer is simply breathtaking...every last surface is bump-mapped realistically. However, even the DirectX8 renderer is amazing. It all comes down to fantastic level design.

Going to miss searching for Chode to find updated stalker news.

I love you too, SimplyPotatoes ;)

Chode.... the MP makes me lag when the lightning flashes... and yes, it is a bit of a nice engine.. Not like other games that consume so much to produce so little. I love the weather effects... even if you watch it, you can hardly see it actually change... such a hidden transition.

Some of us play games to play them. We are not the %.0001 who stress test the latest hardware the instant it comes out. We wait for shmoes like to you endure the pain of the first release. Then sit back and pick the cream of the crop. HL2 still looks great to me and it's still fun to play, but thanks for buying that $600 video card just so you could play it at full detail the day it was released. Now I can get $150 video card and play some of the best games ever.

Thank you shmoe.

I would appear to have the annoyance of the fact that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Command & Conquer 3 seem to have the same release date, but I can only afford one of them

^^ Ahhh, I see. Never been much of a fan of racing games, but I did like one of the Test Drive games on the Playstation 1 :p

I sooooo need to get my hands on S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, I've read just about everything there is about it with reviews, previews and hands-ons and I think it'll be the best FPS game this year for story and depth

Only 28 more days.......... :D
