Civilian
I found out how to enable a quicksave :) (am running vista so paths will be slightly different for xp users) Go To: C:\Users\Public\Documents\STALKER-SHOC open user.ltx in notepad and add the line: bind quicksave kF6 make sure its not before the unbindall line at the top :p oh and you may need to remove the line about voting which is also bound to kF6... but you get the idea :p Press F6 ingame and it'll quick save! :D

PrimoTurbo
I just played it for a couple of hours and the game is unfortunately nothing special. All it is is a bunch of isolated scripted gun battles. The AI is utter crap, if you sneak behind an enemy and start shooting him he will continue to face the other way and stand there for a few seconds, you stop firing and he just stands there. Also the way the AI works, it seems the enemy disappears at some points, as if the enemy is hiding. Like an enemy goes behind a truck and then some how appears behind the next truck over. The engine is not impressive at all, poorly coded because it takes such a powerful computer to power such a graphically unimpressive game. You can outrun all the monsters, the game is linear, you have a main road and then you have little bases on the side but you can't walk too far as there are fences and radiation. Something seems off with the item menus and inventory, you can pick up like 10 of the same gun and the ammo count is confusing. Also the game seems to mess up my gamma and brightness settings all the time. I think the game was way over hyped, anyone else agree?
Civilian
have only played it for around 30minutes, but have to say that i am dissapointed by it aswell so far, hopefully things will pick up :) I agree with the comments on the AI, the 1st firefight you get into my AI squad mates stood in the corners of the building doing nothing at all even when i was standing infront of them being shot at/returning fire.. ppfftt Running is way too fast imo (but again am in the very early stages so it may balance out) The inventory is very fiddly.. infact all menus ingame seem to be. umm.. as for positives, it runs well on my system at max details, the sound is good and draws you into the game (apart from the annoying noise when anyone draws their gun) but yeah, over-hyped.. but has potential i feel :)
notuptome2004
ameSpot: How is the artificial intelligence of monsters and other enemy characters being designed to provide a realistic challenge? Will some characters have daily routines that cause them to patrol certain areas at certain times of day, for instance? What are some of the cunning tricks that enemies will use to try to get an edge against players? leg Yavorsky: We gave our non-player characters a number of abilities to make them interesting, realistic enemies in combat. The general combat AI system is quite versatile and allows NPCs to be responsive to the dynamic situations in the game. Thus, monsters and human characters are able to evaluate their chances in battle based on comparing themselves to enemies with regards to current condition, weapon type, physical strength, ammunition available, and more, and react accordingly. If they consider the enemy weak enough, they are likely to attack him more vigorously, and if they find the enemy too strong, the NPCs might panic and run away. n top of that, we worked out an elaborate precombat system. For example, if the player snipes a guard on a watch tower, enemies that heard the shot or ricochet will go to "aware" condition and find cover or look around. More interestingly, the whole system is universal and applies to all combat in the game. Guided by the A-life system, NPCs live their daily lives: monsters roam the zone in search of food; stalkers go around collecting artifacts, fighting enemies, doing their daily jobs; camps and army posts go through their routine lives with members patrolling or sitting at the campfire playing songs on the guitar. M1h4iL
Getting this game the proper way on Thursday, can't wait, have been waiting for this game for way too long. The game may not be perfect after reading a few impressions here but I am definitely going to enjoy it. I was born in Kiev, which is very close to Chernobyl and have heard a lot about that place and will definitely enjoy walking around in very familiar surroundings. Only 3 more nights now... Ayepecks
Judging from the responses I've been hearing from the game, I won't be getting it. Not going to waste my time.
Sethos
Here's a small user review from another site, The game is indeed good, but I have some gripes with it. Firstly, it looks ass without the dynamic lighting, and with dynamic lighting on it is completely unplayable. All the bump mapping and the HDR etc seems to be turned off with dynamic lighting, that's really weird. Now, I've played about 4 hours into the game, and it seems to become a bit repetitive, as I have seen no change whatsoever in how the game is played, it's all go there and wipe these three million guys out, which leads me to my next point; With such a huge game area, did they HAVE to fill it with such a high quantity of enemies, like the bandits during the beginning of the game? Plus, they seem to respawn pretty often. It kind of destroys the desolate feel of the Zone, and instead presents a Zone that is more densely populated than ****ing Manhattan. Then there are a number of bugs going on, the most annoying so far are, 1) the load game button jamming after my char dies, which means I have to restart the game every time I die. 2) The grass is immensely buggy, and randomly it waves spastically in the wind, like there is a Katrina +10 hurricane going on. 3) The rain is buggy as **** too, like most people seem to have noticed, it becomes very bothering after a while, because it can totally **** up your vision during a heavy assault. The AI in general is good, and sometimes really impressive. But, there are some real annoyances too, such as some soldiers being really psychic. No matter where they are facing, they instantly "see" and shoot at you as soon as you come around a corner, something that really cuts down on the realism. They also have a tendency to hit you even if you are strafing left and right which is pretty annoying too. Though, the generally smart AI really sharpens your skills, and after a while you are picking them off pretty easily, the general goal is to stay as far away from them as possible, since you are probably a better distance shooter than they are. And, is it just me, or is there constant ****ing warfare going on between the bandits and the garbage gang that have their camp among all the tanks and choppers? All that fighting back and forth makes it a tedious place to go through, something that I have been doing a lot, so I just killed the all the good guys there, and finally there was some peace and quiet, I hope that doesn't **** anything up. Now, there was a pretty long rant about the annoying things with the game, but there some pretty cool stuff too (along with the previously mentioned AI). The mutants, at least at first are ****ING scary. I don't get scared by games. Ever. The psychic-****edup-blurry-vision-mutant-thingy near the exit of the dungeon where you find Strelok's stash, scared the living crap out of me. I just wanted to get the **** out of there really badly. In general, the indoor environments are really creepy, and makes you jumpy to say the least, much much more so than crappy non-scary games like Doom 3 and Silent Hill etc, which, again, leads me to my next point; The atmosphere in general is really well done, small things like the aforementioned leaves blowing, grass swaying (when it's not spastic), and I guess the rain effects would be nice without the artifacts. Getting into an old bus station to take cover from the rain and see the rain pouring down outside is awesome, and something I've been wishing for in a game for a long time. Guns feel nice, trajectory works pretty good, especially when you have learned which walls you can shoot through and not. So far I am enjoying it despite some shortcomings, and if the game just gets a little more varied it will definitely be worth playing to the end, but I have an uncanny feeling about the opposite. I hope it will not be the same as in Oblivion which was really cool to begin with but later became so repetitive that it was unplayable, level scaling or not. That's my rant. I will be updating as I go through the game.
InternalStorm
I've just spent a little bit of time with the game. I can say, it definately runs terribly on my X1600XT. I know my card isn't great, but this game could run better for the way it looks. If you crank everything all the way up it looks pretty darn good, and I am impressed by the detail in the textures. While on the topic of graphics, there are some really ****ed up things going on with some of the NPC models. There was this one guys hand who was carrying a gun, and it was all freakish looking... some of the stuff just isn't modelled very well. Trees and grass have always been rough spots in games, and this game is no exception. It is very jagged and looks pretty bad, but it's no worse than games like Oblivion. I have found one typo in the PDA where it had "notvery" as one word, and the whole game has a sort of third world, low budget type of a feel. Don't get me wrong, it is all very detailed and there is a ton of work and thought that went into it, but you can tell that the game isn't nearly as polished as Half Life 2 or Oblivion. The controls are quite good and easy to understand, but some things like crouching don't feel very realistic at all because it is very abrupt. And from what I've played, it is basically get a mission, and then run across a bunch of land and see a ton of anomolies and animals running around, and then kill a bunch of guys, get another coordinate and then run to that place and repeat. The plot is extremely detailed though, it is almost overwhelming. The stupid thing is, sometimes there are voiceovers and other times not. If there is, the voice overs are read very very slowly while the text is on the screen, and the text is usually a large paragraph for every response to a question. If there isn't voiceovers you just have to read it all, and it isn't like Oblivion where it says "I lost my dog, can you go fetch it." It will go on and on for several paragraphs with new names, situations, etc. etc. and it gets confusing. The AI was much too hyped up for its own good. STALKERS basically mill around in the same spots, and if you are around a group of them, they have exactly the same thing to say to you as the one beside them. Fights are basically just shoot, random running around, and then see them again and shoot. It doesn't seem like it's much more than any other game I've seen. The cool thing is though, that if you help one of them you will become friends instead of just neutral or enemy, and they also protect themselves against the mutated animals. The sound is well done, it is quite believable and I enjoyed listening to the guitar being played around the campfire ;) a lot of atmosphere in this respect. I really can't enjoy this game with my graphics card though. I will need to upgrade that first because right now it runs terribly unless I crank all the stuff down. I haven't had the Load/Save game bug however, and load times are actually quite good, especially after you die it just takes 10 seconds to load back up again unlike some games where it takes the same amount of time as loading the game for the first time. I have been looking forward to this game for such a long time that I will definately give it a good go. And most of this post is negativity, but this has been a very big project, and I have barely even started this game and I know it will get much better! It is worthy of purchase because of the low price tag and it's originality. So I will probably be getting this one. Sockie
So overall it doesn't sound like this game is really worth the $80 Dollars (Australian) that's being asked for it. Might have to save my pennies. Judging from the responses I've been hearing from the game, I won't be getting it. Not going to waste my time. Or more importantly waste money. I had a gut feeling that this game was going to be crap.

Caleo Global Moderator Posted March 19, 2007 Global Moderator Share Posted March 19, 2007 (edited) ...but you can tell that the game isn't nearly as polished as Half Life 2 or Oblivion. LMAO.. you call oblivion polished? It runs like crap on most computers... and the graphics just don't justify how poorly it runs. I've played STALKER and it's decent.. I wouldn't call it the best game ever but it's definitely the first RPG/FPS I've played that can hold its own. Pros: - Fairly innovative gameplay (again, fps/rpg hybrid) - Best setting in a game IMO - Tons of weapons - Lots of different enemy types - Unprecedented "creepiness" factor (this might be a pro or a con depending on what you like) Cons: - Fairly poor performance for the graphics you see - Relatively hard even on an easy setting (there's like a billion ways to die in this game..) - Sort of "when you die, you really die" feeling.. When you die, you have to load your last save and the game doesn't autosave very often.. so be prepared to save every 5 minutes (I guess this might be a good thing if you're like me and you get overwhelmed by the creepiness every once in a while.) That's all I can think of for now. Edited March 19, 2007 by Biren

MrKuro
Its okay (played for a couple of hours). sorta what i excepted actually. . .however I do love the atmosphere, sound, the whole look and ambiance of the game. but performance is low for what it should be, a few annoying bugs (weather, grass), and saving is a pain in the butt Also it feels like it will get repetitive as the game goes on. I give it a 7.9/

InternalStorm
Running like "crap on most computers" doesn't make a game not polished. Exactly... I meant polished as in the games appearance and gameplay. And guys, don't let any one of our reviews make you NOT purchase this game. You will definately enjoy it. It is, as previously stated, a very original game type in that the environment is amazingly done and the RPG and FPS elements really add to the experience. You can really "choose your own adventure" because you can take missions or you can say forget it I won't help you... and the graphics, although maybe a little ghetto in a few places, is better than games like Half Life 2 in terms of texture detail and everything other than the character and enemy models. The one big annoyance is that when you steal dead peoples stuff, you always pick up their gun as well and then you end up with 10 of the same gun and have to discard them. Other than that I havent' seen any real graphical glitches like artifacting rain. Be sure you download a verified copy, I know there is one release out there that is supposedly very buggy.
