Razorwing
well I haven't played it, but looking at the screens, it doesn't look impressive at all.
raskren
well I haven't played it, but looking at the screens, it doesn't look impressive at all. Things look extremely aliased (especially vegetation). Hopefully, some heavy anti-aliasing and transparency AA will make things look a bit better. Unimatrix Xero
well I haven't played it, but looking at the screens, it doesn't look impressive at all. ok then remember the first Carmageddon? totally crap gfx, but still dead (excuse the pun) enjoyable to play never judge a book by its cover (unless its EA)
Sethos
Okay, just spent about an hour with this game. The Atmosphere of the entire game feels really great, the wind blowing, the chatting, the growls and odd sounds! Amazing job on this front. But the game is really hard to describe, the graphics are pretty decent - But nothing spectacular. The game seems very cheap, it doesen't feel like a game you wanna actually PLAY! All you wanna do is quickly try a few weapons, see what the game has to offer ... That's it really. The little missions and the "Story" is very, very weak - the game has a very overall cheap feel to it. Some may like it, others certainly won't. DirtyLarry Veteran Posted March 19, 2007 Veteran Share Posted March 19, 2007 Well, today marks a very sad, sad day for me and PC gaming. My PC is officially outdated. I have a Athlon 64 3500+ BFG 6800 Ultra 2GB PC 3200 XiFi Platinum... And this game officially runs like ASS. It defaulted to 1024*768, medium settings, and no Antialiasing. I tried to bump it up right away, and lost a considerable amount of frame rate just going to High and 1280 * 1024. Once worse is my monitor is 1680*1050, and when not choosing the option for full screen, it runs in a Window and not with black around it. I went into my driver control panel to change the settings, and still runs in a window. I just cannot play a game with my desktop behind it, I need the black around it. When 1024*768 fills itself to 1680*1050, it looks really bad. Leaving it at the default (read low) settings, once I get outside, it was struggling at best. Quite a few skips, noticeable slowdown, etc. The thing is, although there is a ton going on, I see nothing that would make the game run as bad as it does currently, but it definitely does not run good. It really is a shame. This was THE GAME to get me away from my XBox 360 for awhile, and although I can play it at low settings, it is just not the same immersive experience, especially considering how Window mode works. Time to upgrade. Sad thing is I will not upgrade until at least November more than likely (I am getting married then so need to save up all the money I can for the wedding), so my PC will continue to collect dust in regards to gaming. Luckily I have my 360, but how I wish I had a PC that could run this at at least 1280. :(

DirtyLarry Veteran Posted March 20, 2007 Veteran Share Posted March 20, 2007 I think it's a brilliant game.In my opinion it's a modern day Oblivion :) I am going to still attempt to play it, as I really am 110% into the idea behind it, I am just disappointed at how I cannot run it at anywhere near what I used to be able to run games at. Lexcyn
Tried it for about 30 mins, here are my first impressions: Pros ? Gameplay seems to be like Oblivion, which is awesome. ? Huge area to explore, seems promising (though I don't believe it's bigger than Oblivion's world). ? Atmosphere is really well done with weather effects, lighting, etc. Cons ? Graphics aren't that great considering development time. ? Runs poorly, even on newer hardware (I'm not sure if this is due to unoptimized code or what). ? Controls are hard to get used to (I looted a body and somehow LOST my gun from quick select). For those wondering what my specs are: Intel Core2Duo E6600 @ 2.4Ghz 2GB Corsair XMS800 Radeon X1950XTX 512MB
StealthMode
It's really slow on my rig... So slow it's a pain in the rear just to stay alive...so no enjoyment here! Yay...another game I really want to play but cant!!! Supreme Commander and Now this... :( Specs are x64 3200 Venice @ 2.6, 1gb RAM, 6800GS...Downright unplayable..might have to tweak some settings, hopefully I willbe able to play this.. Intelligen
I run a Athlon x64 with Windows XP x64 SP2, 2 gig RAM, Chaintech GT7800 and its jumpy. Nvidia need to release new drivers to optimize for game or something? Odd... So far i'm not impressed at all, we'll see how the gameplay continues on but all i know, ineed to add a quick save bind because i already died on first mission. The AI for good guys sucked big time.... they died right away. what the heck!
RGSPro
i played it for 30 minutes, and to me its 30 minutes I will never get back. It stinks, and I had hoped for so much. I looks good in screens, but thats all its good for.

Okay, although it still does not run like a dream by any means, I was able to tweak some settings to get it at least playable. I put settings on low, am now running it in Windowed Mode (I made my desktop just solid black) at 1152, turned up aliasing one notch, turned up antioscopic two notches, turned down the grass, turned down the lighting, turned down the shadows, and turned down object detail. So although it does not look as good as it obviously can, it runs decent and I only have occasional hiccups. The reason I share my tweaks is I just spent the last hour playing it, and I am absolutely in love with the game itself. Brilliant is the word I would use honestly. The open gameplay is truly a welcome change compared to the norm in the world of First Person Shooters, and it really is just a fantastic game that I can see me pouring HOURS into. I am currently scraping up some items I feel I can possibly sell, and if I can sell them, I am going to see if I can upgrade a few components. My biggest issue is I am still on AGP, so an upgrade means at least three new components (Mobo, CPU, GPU) but ideally I would like some new Ram and I might need a new PSU as well depending on what I get. So that is where the issue is with my upgrade, it is not just like I need a new GPU and I am cool, I basically need new everything minus the basics. So chances are I will not be able to pull it off, but I currently have a barely used DS Lite with a few games, an XBox 360 HD Player that has been used 10 times, plus countless other smaller items, so it may be feasible if I really pull out some stops. Even if I cannot upgrade, I can play it even if it is not at the level I have been spoiled at these days, and it is worth playing no matter how good it may run. That is truly my honest opinion after putting about two hours into it. I definitely rushed to conclusions above. Sure, it does not run ideally, nowhere near it actually, but it is worth the 30-60 minutes of fine tuning it in order to check it out. BTW for anyone also possibly thinking about it, out of curiosity I booted up Vista to see if perhaps it ran slightly better under it, and it ran horrible. Really, really bad. LOC Veteran Posted March 20, 2007 Veteran Share Posted March 20, 2007 For all of you who are having slowdown and other issues, if you haven't tried this yet I highly recommend it since I've read on many forums that it does help: Turn off the HDR stuff, and put it on static lighting. According to many people, once you do this, you can indeed max out the game, and plus the game looks better as well.

InternalStorm
Yes the HDR dynamic lighting is what kills the frame rates on this game. I just want to give an update on how it's progressing for me... it is quite difficult! I am on STALKER difficulty which is just one above the easiest setting, and it is quite hard to stay alive. I am constantly eating health suppliments and saving the game (it's a shame that the quicksave will quicksave, but it doesn't want to load my quicksaves!). I can say that it is a little bit repetative in that you are basically killing off a few guys, running down the road to a different complex and doing the same sort of thing, but at the same time it is very unpredictable. I think the AI is turning out pretty good. For instance, you will get different items each time from the same dead bodies if you load from a save point. Also, I was in a watchtower and was shooting at some guy down below, and then a dog comes up to him and kills him off for me :p it was fun to watch from way up in the air! Not sure if I shot at the dog which made it mad and kill the guy or not, but it was funny anyways. Some of the textures are just amazing. Some of the walls and stuff look real, and even some trees (certain ones) look real. Better objects like cigarettes than in most games that are strewn about the level. The dust and leaves blowing around and the sound effects are great too. Sirens and talking people from a distance, as well as animals howling is great. When I left the building, I walked down the stairs, turned a corner and BOOM there was a guy crouched down creeping around the corner of the doorway so I blasted him to death. This was scary beacuse I was playing with the lights out and headphones on. I went outside the building to meet a ton of bad guys and then I died. So starting off again I went down the stairs, this time really quiet and the creeping guy was not there. I went outside and the bad guys weren't there... so obviously the AI is quite random and isn't predictable at all. Sometimes you will meet people sometimes they will go a totally different direction and you won't meet up with them. My one gripe is that I always run out of "machine gun" ammo. I get some from the dead guys, then I use it all up and try different guns but they are all out of ammo too, and I always have to resort to my pistol. Also, I believe you can only have the pistol, knife and machine gun as a weapon at any given time, so basically you have to switch between guns in the items menu which is a pain. There are grenades though, and I just had one and used it to kill a bunch of guys standing in a clump when I snuck up on them. That was fun ;) So I hope that sheds a bit more light on this game, which is actually a first of it's genre, melding together the FPS and RPG genres. Don't let reviews put you off, try this for yourself. The levels are HUGE and load points are very far apart, and loading doesn't take long at all either. Fun stuff. wuzz
Well ... those who say it looks like crap should really get gaming hardware which is newer than 5 years. With 1600 resolution and every possible setting maxed out it looks great. I mean really great. On top of a hill with max viewing distance you'll have pretty amazing scene. All the animals & stuff. Strangely this game was really slow with default settings (1024 rez, half settings in the middle somewhere) but when i maxed it out (full AA, 1600 rez) it ran smooth as kitten (loaded faster as well). Too bad it crashes a lot :( I guess it's vista related compatibility problem this time, not display driver - game crashes, not display driver like before. M1h4iL
Just a head up for Australians, I got my copy of STALKER collectors edition! I have no idea how and why but the game came in 2 days earlier and I just got a call from my local EB that my copy has arrived! I am from Perth so it may be different for other cities in Australia. Anyhow, going to install this game right away, the requirements say it needs 10GB of free space, thats huge! The collectors box looks really nice btw, has a nice guide giving some details on the zone and like a diary of what happened. Anyway looks like no sleep tonight, I am off to have fun!!! Sockie
I'm totally undecided. A few days ago I was ready to buy this game but if it's that buggy and the graphics are not that cool then I just don't know. :( For me it's either Test Drive Unlimited (PC) or STALKER. Just not sure which I would enjoy more.
