Quartermann: Gears of War and Dead Rising

What gets dredged up in EGM's rumor mill?

By Luke Smith, 03/02/2007

In the April issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, the rumor monger by which all other rumor mongers are to be judged, Quartermann, has a little bit of juice on a couple of the biggest games of last year.

Without spoiling everything, Quartermann expects to see new download able content for Gears of War in the very near future, but that's not the best part. Those pesky achievements that require "ranked play" to unlock? Word is Epic wants to get rid of the "ranked" requirement. Will Microsoft play ball?

Is the Zombie Apocalypse drawing nigh? Probably not, but what if players had the ability to fight the onslaught of zombies in Capcom's Dead Rising with a partner over Xbox Live? Quartermann hints that an upcoming platinum version of Dead Rising will have an online co-op mode. But what about the folks who rushed out and bought Dead Rising last year? They'll be taken care of, too -- but like Quartermann says "for a price, of course."

Quartermann talks about what's really going on with Warhawk, what's next for Resistance: Fall of Man and what the future holds for Namco Bandai's Xenosaga in the April issue of EGM.

If these rumors are true I can't wait! co-op in Dead rising would be sweet! The new content is coming that is not a rumor. That was confirmed by one of the 1up.com editors but they didnt mention anything about the removing of the ranked games to get achievements. Man I hope this stuff is true :D

finally! i never got it...what's the need for ranked and player games? why can't they be one and the same?

It helps keep those who play super hardcore from ruining the game for those who like to play casual. :)

these explanations still don't work for me. if on the PC unified game servers work, why not on the 360? i say put em all together and let them sort themselves out. sometimes it sucks when you stay online for hours and it doesn't count towards achieves and such.

No, I don't want them to take "ranked" out of the achievement. If they do, I'll be really upset, because I worked really hard on those achievements.

because on the console people don't want to play on the same team as somebody who sucks and plays, for example, halo 2 once a month whereas you may play it every other day. you can't really compared the pc and console competitive landscape IMO. using a game like bf2142 as an example, it's real easy to suck and not effect the outcome of the game when it's 32 players on each side, but in a game where it might only be 4-8 players on each side, then 1 sucky person makes it that much harder for the others.

Yeah, but you don't get achievements on the PC - and with most of those games there isn't a unified ranking system, either. If you're not playing with personal friends on the 360, just go with ranked matches. If you want to play with friends you can either mess about for a while until you end up in the same match or just start a player match and simply invite all of your friends and have a ball in the process.

Personally, I'd don't mind allowing people to easily play with friends in ranked matches (I don't care about my rank all that much), but I get where the devs are coming from. They just don't want their games ruined by semi-pros always teaming up against a group of people that have never played together. When more games get good clan support it wont' be as much of an issue.

I worked hard for my GOW achievements too, but I hope they do take out the ranked part. It's an annoying trend... games like Prey have a good achievement system. I hope more games follow suit.

Annoying but neccessary. Without it, you wouldn't feel so special having those achievements, cause every one else would have them. If they let you invite friends to ranked, then you could just kill them over and over again....till you get what you need.

and LOL at Dead rising co-op......haha....No seriously. Wouldn't work.

Oh good god no, you wouldn't feel special about getting an achievement for a videogame? Who cares how other people go about getting their achievements? Just get them the way you want to.

Personally, I'd be glad about this, because for whatever reason, I can sit in a lobby for a ranked game for ten minutes and it won't fill up, whereas in a player match, games fill up almost instantly.

I go quicker in ranked, actually.

Unless i invite friends etc....

i never said i preferred it at all, cause i don't, i just said it was necessary.

How come?

Maybe you can, but i can't see two Frank West's running around at the same time. One might want to go off and do something else, elsewhere.

Its a great single player game and i think that co-op wouldn't do it any good. If they can find a way to get it into the sequel and make it awesome, great for them, and us. But the game i've been playing non stop for a god damn long time, wouldn't work with it.

Don't you get it? That's the problem with ranked matches. People try to play with their friends to ###### for achievements. Without "ranked" being in the achievements, you can get some better online games in if you actually want to play ranked matches.

I'm all for this. Who cares if you feel "special"? It's stupid. Achievements should be able for everyone to get, even those who don't want to play in ranked matches. Prey has the perfect type of achievements. They aren't insanely easy, and they aren't insanely hard. They're just where it should be.

GOW's achievements are decent too, but I would much prefer being able to get them in player matches, too. An example of achievements that are far too extreme would be Quake 4.

Don't you think that gears actually wanted to give people a challenge instead? its not like every ones walking around with the 10,000 kill achievement....Hell, it annoys the **** out of me too buddy, i'd love some of those achievements, but i can see the reasons as for why they did it. Thats the point i am making.
