Ellipsis
Anybody that finds these funny is too easily amused. They're just snipes at Microsoft - they are devoid of any actual humour. Micro fanboy anyone? Are you saying that snipes at Microsoft are void of ever being funny? That's what I'm gathering from what you say. Relax Popeye.
neoadorable
devoid of humor? this was quite funny, actually. and Holden notwithstanding, GM North America is indeed in moderately dire straits.
ScottKin
Holden might be doing ok for itself, financially-speaking...but GM on the whole is a sinking ship - and Holden is the life-ring that is trying to help 1 million passengers stay above water. When GM dies, so will Holden. --ScottKin

Australian's are smart car makers. Just because the parent company goes under, Aussie operations will continue. Ford and Holden are like this. They are both there own companies. GM called on Holden for money, and struck up a deal. Holden still operates as its own company, and is calling all the shots. They haven't been operated by GM directly for years upon years. neoadorable
it's quite possible Holden will be spun off to another conglomerate should GM go under. I'd like that to happen as Holden is one of the few carmakers i respect today, they still make fullsize V8's, rear wheel and all that..and the Caprice nameplate still lives down there, right? Nashy
Caprice is the baby of Holden. Beautiful cars.

They haven't been operated by GM directly for years upon years. um. That isn't quite how it works. GM owns holden 100%. Has owned it since the 1930's. If GM goes under, it wont happen overnight. They will probably sell holden (most likely to a chinese firm) to minimize the losses. Holden operates as it's own company because it is in GM's best interest to do so, but, if that changes, they have to comply with whatever GM wants them to do, as they are owned....100%....by GM. Anyway, to talk about the article. Kinda funny. I do believe bill gates was correct in his initial statement however. I think the car companies have just operated by the status-quo, because no one ever pushed them to change. There is no reason for us to be using cars that can't get 100's of miles per gallon, or, even better, don't run on gas at all. cars run on 19th century technology. A ferrari still uses the same principle of a Model-T. Nothing really inovative has happened.
Nashy
Its hard to explain how Holden works. But you are wrong. Trust me, I have a family friend who's pretty high up on the board at Holden. If GM goes under (General Motors Australia Pty. Ltd) goes under. Its a funny web of ownership. Holden Corporation Pty Ltd is the owner of Holden. Don't be mistaken. However, the operate as General Motors Australia Pty. Ltd. which is owned of course by GM International. So in reality, Holden is the smarter of GM's companies, and in the late 80's early 90's cut of the big ties to GM. Hence the name change from GM Holden to Holden. They were then operating outside of GM, and had very little to do with GM. When GM started losing a lot of money, they called on Holden, and the link was re-made, however, with difference terms in the contracts of business. Holden purchased the right to use the Zeta platform for development of the VE series, and GM (and related companies) pay Holden to export their cars. Thats longwinded, and I could keep going. Basically. GM goes under, Holden simply doesn't worry, and would just continue to trade under their actual company name (Holden Corporation Pty. Ltd.) I'm not going to tell you who I know. But I can tell you. GM puts very little money into the company. Its all Holden's money, and the main thing GM pays is the CEO's salary.

Robgig1088
And if linux made a car, they would, for free, deliver it to you. Though, when you got it, it came as a box of parts and a manual. But when you finally set it up the way you wanted it, its the most comfortable, reliable car in town  (Speaking as Linux about when the article was written (circa 199x). Now, of course, most stuff works out of the box but you still may have to get your hands a litttttle greasy :))
