1080P/I Resolution Question

Recommended Posts

Sup fellas,

I own a Pioneer PDP-5050HD.

Seems to handle 480i/p 720i/p resolutions just fine.

Now, with my PS3 for example, a game/movie that runs on 1080p, shows as 1080i on my display.

Now question is, am i really missing out on something here, any real difference in picture?

you mean it shows 720p on your display not 1080i right?

For example, PS3 comes on, and res shows as 1080i rather than 1080p.

So far every movie/game capable of 1080p, shows as 1080i for some reason.

Yeah that TV is not able to do 1080p which stands for progressive scanning.

I might be wrong but I don't think there are any plasma TVs that can do 1080p res, although we should see them soon.

Since 1080p is actually 1920x1080 and 1080i is 1920x1080 divided in half (because it's interlaced), you will be losing some detail, however I don't know if your eye could pick it up unless you have a super clear display and really good eyes. You may notice some down-conversion artifacts but that depends on the PS3's ability to down-convert the signal to 1080i.

That being said, play around a bit and try it on 720p to see if you notice a difference. Some displays are better displaying with 720p than 1080i, but it depends on the screen and the device that's hooked up (ex: my xbox 360 is better at 720p than 1080i, but my PS3 is better on 1080i).

The set is 720p native. You should have your ps3 set to 720p.

or not...

if you set 720p doesn't Blu-Ray only play in 480p?

hence using the 1080i setting until they get that fixed (at least that's what i'm doing)

According to Pioneer site, the tv should be able to do 1080p on independent HDMI? Inputs.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/p...1066721,00.html

It doesn't do 1080p.

He can do that, but for the best response time he should be using 720p for games or he can get a real blu-ray player.

Plasma, LCD and DLP are naturally progressive formats. Only CRT's are capable of displaying interlaced signals. Your Plasma TV can only do 720p so anything above that will be downcoverted to 720p.

Since 1080p is actually 1920x1080 and 1080i is 1920x1080 divided in half....

People says this but it's not true, there is not much difference between 60i and 30p, they both produce 30 frames a second in the end. However the confusing seems to come when comparing 60i to 60p which are NOT the same thing.

60p = 60 progressives frames

60i = 60 fields = 30 frames

So 60p has twice the frame rate of 60i.

All this confusion could be resolved if every tv stated what it can and can't do:

1. 1080p24 = yes

2. 1080p30 = yes

3. 1080i60 = yes

4. 1080p50 = no

5. 1080p60 = no (downconvert to 1080p30)

==========
