[HDTV] So confuse my brain hurts!

p is progressive and you get all of the vertical lines of each frame at once

i is interlaced and you get every other line on alternate frames effectively halving bandwith needed

There is no 'best' it depends what it's for

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_scan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlaced

Read those. Generally for fast moving stuff you want progressive (eg sport)

but for resolution Interlaced is good as it fits more resolution in the same bandwith as a similar progressive signal.

Probably evern more confused now eh?

EDIT: Good point - you can also get 1080p but its uncommon at the moment outside of computer monitors (i think..)

it depends on what you are playing/viewing. if it involves lots of action and movement, progressive is the way to go. you'll see flickering and artifacts if you view the same scenes with interlaced. if you're viewing something with a lot of static images, interlaced is fine.

edit: looks like someone beat me to the response while i was typing this :p

Well, we assume hes buying a HDTV for his X360 - so its okay :D

I guess its move then because I already have a 360 and a HDTV :p. I bought my HDTV couple days ago so thats why I was asking because I'm new to this stuff :D

Well since you already have the TV, I'd say it's best to use whatever type of display your TV has (and also the closest resolution). LCD and plasma TVs are progressive and CRTs are usually interlaced.

However, in the long run it's whatever looks best to you.

If your set is an LCD or plasma, it has a native resolution, which is either going to be 1080p or 720p (although native resolution in a plasma is an interesting theory for a lot of sets...).

If it's 720p, you'll be best setting the 360 to that.

It really depends. Generally speaking, 720p is better for fast moving stuff, as other people have said, because it renders the full image each time it refreshes the screen, whereas 1080i only renders half the image each time it refreshes the display.

However, I have my 360 set to 1080i because it is noticably sharper in the Dashboard versus 720p, and I don't notice any problems within games, fast moving or not.

I personally prefer 720p over 1080i, as when it's interlaced, the picture gets noticabley choppy on moving pictures, because of the way interlacing works. Obviously 1080p would be better than 720p, however, 720p is far more common.

i use 1080i because that's all my TV can do. I doubt i'd use 720P tho because the bump in resolution just makes GOW so much sexier.

i have a 61" native 1080p set, ive tried them both. 1080i looks better on my set than 720p. So just try them out and decide whats best for you

Obviously 1080i is going to look better on your 1080p set than 720p would.

If you have an interlaced hdtv, such as a CRT you are most likely forced to 1080i.

If you had a digital progressive hdtv, such as a LCD/Plasma, then match it to the display.

Example: 720p/1080i LCD = use 720p because that is the native of the panel.

If you feed a 1280x720 (720p) tv a 1080i signal, the TV will use the built in scaler chip to scale it back down to 720p.

Theres NO point in making your tv do extra scaling. Feeding it a native signal is the best way to go 99% of the time

IIRC, the dashboard is rendered at 480i or 480p...

I don't know for sure but I think not... I notice a difference between resolutions on my LCD HDTV... A noticeable difference at that.

Definitely not true.

If you got your 360 running on component cables, try running a DVD and press the dashboard button on your controller, you will see the difference since the DVD doesn't upscale the image unless you're using the VGA cable. =)
