Another dead 360...

Recommended Posts

Well, my 360, little more than a month old, is already dead. Last night, while playing a game of MLB 2k7, the device started to make a loud grinding noise, so I shut it off. Today, I go to play and it can't read any discs. Thank god i got the easy to deal with extended service from Best Buy.

God, I hate the fact that MS continues to deny there's a problem.

another one bites the dust. i feel bad whenever i hear about a fellow 360 owner losing their 360. that also adds to my fear that my 360 will die too since it's been acting up. i said it before...everytime i turn my 360 on, i just pray that i don't see the ring of death.

Ditto, mine's been making weird scratching noises, then it'll stop for a while and make whining noises. I'm kind of hoping it kicks the bucket if it's going to, because my warranty will be up soon :/

One of my friends has already replaced his and my brother's is starting to make strange noises also. I hope they get this sorted out...

Just wondering, whats the manufacturing date of it?

It seems like the luck of the draw though, as I know a few people with 360's (and had them for about a year) and none of them has died yet anyway.

Hopefully the replacement will last you longer.

btw - I have a feeling the next podcast will have a section about 360's dying.

September 2006 is my units date. I don't have the exact date cause it's already put into the box. I'm going to be heading back to the store (just got home from ****ing work) in a few to replace it.

No kidding. Also the fanboys that continue to insist that the owner isn't taking proper care of the console and its there own fault annoys me as well.

I don't know how MS has managed to avoid a class action lawsuit so far....

Sucks to be you...?

Mines 11 months old now, it works perfect (launch console batch). Although the warranty is now void due to modification it still runs like a beast.

When I opened up my 360 few months ago, I noticed the heatsinks were CLOGGED with dust. I vacuumed all of that crap out.

If my 360 dies anytime soon, I'll chuck it out the window and get the "upcoming" one with HDMI out. :)

I'm not sure if it's quieter, but the spin down of the drive when I turn off the console is much less severe sounding. New drive or not, that can't be anything but a good sign.

oh man that sucks! :( MS defiantly needs to address/admit that this issue is more widespread than they think.

I just got my replacement 360 last week and its still loud lol But it looks like is has a different DVD drive. The new date on mine is 8/24/2006.

Where do you see the manufacturer date? on the bottom?

on the back of the 360 above the S/N number. :)

Got the new one with a date of 12/12/2006......I'm going to try to listen to see if it sounds quieter or not.

Some people claimed that the Samsung drive was quieter then the Hitachi-LG from the launch time (which is now found in 360's again, with beefed up firmware protection), but I haven't noticed any significant difference now that I have a replacement console with the newer drive. But the BenQ is supposed to be far better (as you've heard). You should be able to find DVD tray comparisons to know whether or not you got lucky and a BenQ drive is included.

Hmm...I'm getting worried now. With all these problems, not sure if I should buy my Xbox 360 this weekend.

While the 360 does have a above-average defection rate compared to other consoles.. That doesn't mean you should avoid buying one. Just make sure you get a good warranty, either from the store you purchase it from or Microsoft itself. Oh and I would personally recommend getting it from the store, not Microsoft. Their customer support needs a lot of work.

I'm really not sure what causes the defect rate in the 360, and why it hasn't been corrected despite it being out for over a year now.. Some people do have launch consoles still working flawlessly, so at least it isn't that common. But personally I have had to get mine replaced.
