Oblivion Update is out.

Yeah, the Xbox and Xbox 360 controllers are both standard USB. The original just had proprietary connectors but with an adapter you can use them on the 360 or even with your PC.

the update made loading times marginally faster, indoors environments now sometimes have that dream-like sheen other games have sported (Brothers in Arms, for one), and Live reports Oblivion as having 1250 points now. that could be in preparation for Shivering Isles, tho.

Yeah, it is. It's actually been 1250 for about a week (well, that's when I first noticed it). I was looking all over marketplace for Shivering Isles when I first saw the new achievements... :/

Ok, I've had a chance to play with the new update installed. All I can say is that the improvements by this update are pretty subtle.

Graphics are improved and the viewing distance is improved in outdoor areas. I'd say that the image looks a little less aliased and the colors have smoother gradients, especially for spell effects. Still, subtle.

The load times are, in fact, lower. I would say by about a second or so. It is hard to benchmark. This is just by my observation.

where do i get the update i dropped my CD in but im getting nothing

You have to be logged in with a XBox Live profile and then start the game. Either Silver (free) or Gold ($$) will get you the update but you're going to have to be online.

i did that and they only contect it loads is the free stuff i got like a month ago

Huh? What content? The update everyone is talking about is just an upgrade to the game (fixes bugs/etc).. There's no new free content. Shivering Isle expansion is something else, and will cost approx $29 U.S.

they had a free download a little while back that normally cost 150 or 200 point

and i know what the update is i just need it lol

Ohh sorry I misunderstood you. Your 360 is online right? And you also have a HDD or no?

There's a cache flush command that also flushes all game updates. You may want to try it if you aren't able to get a popup for the game update.

Sorry to go slighty off topic.

Should I pick Oblivion up for ?20?

definately... its my most played game for the 360... you can just replay it hundreds of times, and its still fun everytime. then again, i do love RPG games... but its still an awesome game which is highly addictive. when i'm hooked i'll play into the early hours of the morning and leave my 360 on so i can play it straight away when i wake up... the only problem with it on the 360 is loading times... but you get used to them.

I've always had Oblivion be inconsistent with loading times... Half of the time every loading screen will take a minute and a half, and the other half all my loading times are around 15 seconds. I've never been able to figure out why the loading times change, there doesn't seem to be a pattern. Hopefully this update will fix this, although I'm not sure that anyone else was experiencing this haha.

you should definitely pick up Oblivion for that price, or for even much more than that! i agree, this is one of my most played games on the 360 and is very nice indeed.

can't wait for Shivering Isles. it's nice how Bethesda made sure to put plugs for it in Oblivion...like NPC's talking about the island and such.

For some reason Oblivion on the 360 is the only game that will begin to fragment in the cache files over time. This is why it's so inconsistent, because as soon as that cache is flushed, things should return to normal.. And the way that cache is flushed is either manually by using the dashboard command (Which also erases all game updates), or play other games that erase/take over that chunk of HDD space.

Don't get me wrong, even with the load times I loved Oblivion on the 360. My PC just can't handle the level of visuals the 360 version produces. But if I had a PS3, I would definitely rebuy a copy. The PS3 version's load times are very nice, simply because the game uses over 4GB of cache and obviously the past year since the PC/360 version was released they've improved the loading system.

I do wish the 360 update would have provided more upgrades for the loading system, hell I wouldn't even mind using 4GB of the HDD just for playing Oblivion, it's that good of a game.

Oh there's something else.. This is something I couldn't quite understand with the 360 version.. You see on a PC you can use what's called Anistrophic (sp?) filtering.. What it does is essentially makes textures in the distance higher quality and easier to see. The PS3 version has this, and the PC obviously.. It doesn't result in less performance (in fact it only slightly changes the framerate), and the 360 is even better at it then the PS3 thanks to the Xenos GPU... Yet on the 360 some textures in the distance seem to have it, but ground/etc textures don't. Oh well, like I said my PC can't even handle the same visuals at a lower resolution lol!

If you like RPGs and open-ended gameplay, then definitely pick up Oblivion because it is the best. I just started a new character after seeing so many flaws with my old character and I picked up the strategy guide. I highly recommend the strategy guide, btw. My problem with the game is I know if I start playing it will blow my entire night as I'll be hooked until bedtime. The open-endedness of it all is kind of overwhelming too.

But it is probably the best put together game I've seen. I mean, it is an entire world. Although, I think I liked the whimsicalness of Morrowind more, Oblivion tops it in gameplay, graphics, and size.

My only real complaints are how hard it is to aim spells and arrows in the game. A little auto aim would be helpful for me:DD. Also all the voices are done by like 4 or 5 people so just about every black dude in the game sounds the same:pp. At least there is voice acting though. Only thing you really need to read are books and tomes, but every character "talks" to you unlike Morrowind where you had to read everything (and there was that awful typeface that hurt my eyes after awhile).

That is SO true!!! :D

When I first got Oblivion, I didn't really like Morrowind or any RPG for that matter, but I love Oblivion, I have no clue why really... its an awesome game though!!

Actually, there is another way to clear the cache. Seeing as this is how Bethesda recommends you do it, it is probably the best. ;)

I tried it when I started to run into the long load times and it worked perfectly. Hope this helps my fellow Oblivion players out. :D
