360 died almost exactly after 1yr

Recommended Posts

So yea, a couple of you guys already know about my 360 kicking the bucket.

Funny thing is, its perfect timing to do so. If the damn thing would've died just 3 days earlier, I would've been good-to-go.

But, nooooooooooo... it decided to wait till I was out of warranty coverage. lol.

What are the chances? It's almost like it came with a built-in self destruct mechanism.

Got off the phone with a support rep...

Now I gotta cough up +$100 (and thats with a 25% discount) for shipping + repairs.

Petty shi--y experience.

Ohh well, not too keen on dishing out another +$100 atm. I'm pretty let down. Maybe its just cause of the uncanny timing.

argh all these 360 fault stories are really off putting, is it really worth getting one only to have it die? i really wanna get one but if they are that prone to self destruct, im not sure.

They aren't prone to self-destruction if you look after them. People don't make topics about how their Xbox has never broken so you only ever hear of the bad side of things.

a lot of the people who had their 360s die also looked after them pretty well, so in those cases you can't put the blame on them.

Ouch very sorry to hear. I definitely hope Microsoft improves their support centers..

I'm not sure if this would work.. But you might want to consider calling Microsoft to purchase an "Extended Warranty". I don't know what the limits/restrictions on it are, but I bought mine for around $50 for 2 years warranty. If it works, you'll pay $50 less, and get 2 years of coverage. Whether or not they'll allow you to buy the coverage when your original warranty has already expired I don't know.. But I would give it a few shots ;).

As the rest of these guys said, that just isn't true. Mine was in the same place for the year I had it (died in November 2006), I always cleaned the dust off if any formed, and it had plenty of breathing room. Not only that but a Monster surge protector made sure nothing happened to it due to surges or other electrical issues.

It's certainly possible to have a console since launch still working well.. I mean I have an xbox from it's launch (November 2001) that still works with no problems. Of course the 360 seems to be prone to failure more often then the original.

i feel sorry for you guys.. i've had 5 different units and none have given any problems atol.. 2 were launch-day units.. (not all are used by me obviously!)

fix it your self?

Uh.. Yeah.. No? Not only would that break your current warranty (or chance of getting a warranty in the future).. But it would also require you to not only have knowledge in electronics engineering, but that you actually have spare parts for the 360. Unless you work at Microsoft, and if you did I think it wouldn't be too hard to get a replacement, not such a good idea :p.

That's pretty horrid. If it's just 3 days after the day you've purchased your xbox I'd ask to speak to their customer service dept and see if they can cover you. I've spoken to quite a few companies about this and they are quite lenient when ppl go a few days to a few weeks outside their warranty period.

I think you misunderstood him. His 360 didn't die 3 days after purchasing it.. It died 3 days after his warranty ran out. He would definitely be covered if it died so soon after purchase.

If I were you I'd give them a call. Perhaps you can shame them into cutting you a deal if it actually is only three days too late.

Edit: Woo 1000 posts :p

If he has no warrenty whats to lose :p

i'd try some of the methods posted on xbox-scene, there aint much in the 360 and heatgun method works for most people

I agree. You really have to raise some hell (in a good way) that it is only 3 days out of warranty. They really truly should make an exception.

3 weeks, I could perhaps see, but since it is only 3 days, and you are personally responsible for at least 3 of your friends buying the 360 itself once they saw yours since you have had it for a year now(just say it, trust me), it should be the least they can do for a person so loyal to the company itself and always supports MS products. (again, just say it, no matter how hard it may be) ;)

It is truly worth a shot, just be polite about it all, and immediately request talking to a supervisor. Wait as long as it takes. You will need a higher up anyway to authorize such a decision, so cut the small talk and go straight who can help you. Be cordial about it all, but firm, and I would really think they would perhaps make an exception.

In regards to the amount of threads these days about 360's that have gone awry, it really is alarming. Although I agree with the fact you do never see threads about people not having issues, even believe that, i really feel there have been way more of these threads than there should be. Way more than acceptable.

lol, i did what i could with the rep and highlighted that it was only a matter of a couple days, and that what were the possibilities of it happening.

Needless to say she was a real beeeyotch... in the end i just took the ref # and said i was going to look further into my options and that i would call back.

Maybe next time i'll get someone a bit more down to earth.

As far as taking care of the 360, you can actually still smell its packaging it's so taken care of. i never let any dust build, and didn't play so often.

Call around a bit more, Microsoft have different tech support centre's, and some of them are more helpful than others.

You need to take DirtyLarry's advice and ask for a supervisor. No one else can, nor is probably willing, to help you out.

Exactly. If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Definitely work a shot to talk to a few people. We are talking about 100$ here, so a few minutes wasted on the phone might pay off in the long run.

Good Luck. (Y)

Seriously you have to just skip the rep. Again, do not be rude, but as soon as you get someone on the phone ask for their supervisor right away. If they ask why, say it is reference to what you believe is unacceptable policy. Stress it is your fifth call in, and no offense to the person you are talking to, but you need to get straight to someone in charge. And also make sure to say you will wait as long as you need to in order to talk to that person. Firm, but nice, works.

Ah, yes. Murphy's Law of Warranties: your equipment will die no less than one month after your warranty expires.

Happened to me...DC port on my laptop died 2 weeks after the 3-year warranty expired. $200 I would've rather not spent...

Yours is next buddy. I baby-sat mine and it died a month before 1yr old. Microsoft replaced it but I don't have very much confidence in my refurbished xbox 360 (ahem..from oct '05!!! mother ****er). Probably won't last till end of summer. 360s are garbage and I'm telling people to stay clear from them. MS can't make hardware.
