Smashing Pumpkin
hey folks, I'm just wondering what sort of updates/downloads can be downloaded off a PC and burnt to a CD, then installed onto the 360 that way rather than directly from Xbox Live. If I can't get live, can i still get updates for games, e.g. the recent Oblivion update, and can I get Downloadable content? I know you can get the 360 update but can you get stuff for the games? Thanks in advance Richard xxx
El-Diablo
your xbox silver account should give you access to almost everything on Xbox live. Just connect the 360 to the internet and you should be able to get nearly everything you want. Granted i can't be 100% sure purely because i've had Gold the whole time i had my 360. But no, you cannot download to CD then install on the 360 that doesn't work.
Smashing Pumpkin
Just cos' I don't think I can get broadband where I live so I meant no Live at all actually, sorry. :( Richard xxx
FreqFace
I'm assuming you have dial-up? Well, there are ways to use your 360 on dial-up, I believe. However, it can only be used for downloading content, ie. no online gaming.
DirtyLarry Veteran Posted March 27, 2007 Veteran Share Posted March 27, 2007 I was always under the impression you could download updates, both dashboard and game related, then burn them to a CD????? I have been connected since second one online, but I really thought this was the case. I guess I am wrong???

I guess I am wrong??? yeah, they mentioned that when they were marketing the 360 @ launch. But I have never seen it online. I guess they figured giving people access to the raw files for a dashboard update or firmware upgrade would just hasten the hacking community. Other than that I have no reason why it hasn't happened. Okay cool. I thought I had imagined it somewhere, so it is good to know I was not making things up. Good thing my friend who does not have his 360 online at all never took me up on downloading any dashboard or game updates for him, as I have told him more than once I would do it for him. :pinch:
American Ninja
You can connect to XBL via dialup. Thats how I do it until broadband comes to my area this summer. You can download stuff and play games online too. :)
+dnast Subscriber² Posted March 27, 2007 Subscriber² Share Posted March 27, 2007 You can download the latest Dashboard update here and burn it to CD. You'll probably have to get online to get individual game updates.

Smigit
it can only be used for downloading content, ie. no online gaming. I doubt the Xbox hardware knows or cares what form of connection you have. Any device (not necessarily even an xbox) shouldn't really need to know the connection just know that there is one that can be used (assuming any initialization like dialing is accounted for). As long as theres a network it should be happy and should be able to game even if it's quite slow.
Smashing Pumpkin
Hmm, okay then, so, you're saying I'd be able to take a line from my phone socket on the wall to the 360, somehow change it from RJ45 to ethernet, just plug it and connect to xbox live silver with no costs, hmm, sounds okay. It's a fair distance from my wall socket to my 360 though, would it be best to have a long RJ45 cable then ethernet converter xbox, or short RJ45, ethernet converter, long ethernet cable xbox, or does that just not matter at all lol, just want to preserve as much speed as possible since it's dial up. Thanks Richard xxx
Smigit
youll want a router/modem to do it I believe. You wont be able to plug it straight into a wall as far as I know. I certainly wasnt implying you can just plug anything into anything and expect them to have internet connections. Like I said you have to ensure connection handling and all that is accounted for also. I imagine it *could* be fairly messy for dialup. I was more saying that once you do have a working setup then theres no reason you shouldnt be able to play games if you can dload content. What I would likely do to make things easier and remove cables is buy a wireless bridge/adapter for the 360 and a wireless router for the PC. Get a wirless network between the 2 and enable connection sharing so the 360 can see the PC's internet connection. The perk here is that when/if you do get broadband you can continue using the wireless equipment...well the receiver at least (although the router more likely than not). Smashing Pumpkin
I have an old PC right next to my 360 that's just used for sharing music onto the 360. If I ran an RJ45 cable from the wall to the PC and then the ethernet cable from the PC to the 360 would that be useful for a connection at all? This is just a guess, I know next to nothing about networking. Thanks Richard xxx
jimbo11883
Sounds like it would work as long as you have ICS turned on.
Smashing Pumpkin
What's ICS? Richard xxx EDIT: This diagram shows my current situation, if I turned ICS on on the Old PC would I be able to connect to xbox live silver if the Old PC was turned on? American Ninja
Here is how I do it: 1. If you have Windows XP go to Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet Connections>Network Connections>Right click on your dialup connection select Properties>Click the Advanced tab>Under Internet Connection Sharing put a check in "Allow other Network users to connect through this computer's internet connection.>Click Ok> Then click Ok again if a window pops up>While your still in Network Connections make sure your Local Area Connection card is enabled. If it isnt right click on it and select enable. Now shut down your computer and make sure your 360 is off as well then take the ethernet cable that came with your 360 then plug it in to your 360 and the other end to your computer. Now start up your computer. Once it boots up dialup to the internet(You must wait till you are connected to the internet before you turn your 360 on) Now once you are connected turn on your 360 then signup for a XBL account it will down load some up dates so it may take 30mins. or so. Enjoy :)

Thanks Richard xxx That will work. Mines connected the same way except instead of a dialup connection my PC is wirelessly connected to a router feeding the PC broadband connection. What happens between the wall and the PC wont matter just that you connect the 360 to the PC correctly. You will need to enable internet connection sharring as someone said which is in the network properties. You will also have to have your PC on (and connected to the net) when connecting to live so that the connection is sharred. But yes. As long as that PC next to the 360 can connect to the net your xbox will be able to as well. BTW nice name (I'm also a fellow "Richard")
Smashing Pumpkin
Ooooh, thank you so much everyone :D Richard xxx EDIT: Wait I've stupidly put RJ45 on the diagram when i don't think it is, it's just your standard phone cable, this diagram is correct: Edited March 27, 2007 by Smashing Pumpkin

Well, I know the Xbox won't know the difference, but it will be extremely slow and laggy, probably unplayable. I mean, Xbox Live on dial-up? No, just no. But for silver subscription it's fine. Smashing Pumpkin
What is worth downloading from xbox live silver when you've only got dialup, i don't wanna be download 100mb files y'know. I'm thinking - take the HDD to a friends house who does have broadband, download updates and XBLA games, then take the HDD back to mine and reap the benefits?
