.avi in vista

I have a freshly installed copy of Vista and am trying to play a .avi video file and am only getting audio, i think i need a codec but dont no where to get a proper one at, any help?

Try installing ffdshow (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow). This has a whole bunch of codecs, but I'm not sure if it works properly on Vista.

Alternatively, install the XviD/DivX codec. That should solve your problem. :)

or stormcodec I 2007.02.01

personally i prefer stormcodec

As already mentioned, FFDShow and yes, it works fine in Vista (as does media player classic) :)

I use VLC for anything video and WMP11 for anything audio.

Usually when I install a fresh system, I snag XviD, DivX, AC3, FLAC, and VLC Player.

That almost always keeps me pretty satisfied, rarely will I find something I cant play (Real media or Quicktime files for which i snag Real Media and Quicktime Alternative Codecs).
