Lovell
For some reason Operas started using loads of memory and is beyond slow, I looked on the Opera forum and they said it was because of duplicate plugins yet even when I disable the plugins, java, sound, even animated gifs it's still terrible
Lant
Have you tried uninstalling. Deleting everything Opera related then reinstalling?
halcyoncmdr
Well if its not the plugins then its possibly a messed up install, so do as Lant said. Or it could be that you just have a lot of tabs open that are using a lot of memory for each of them. I have also noticed that when viewing PDFs the Adobe reader tends to stay open for a while afterwards, but that happens to FF as well on my computer. What kind of "high memory usage" is it? Are you just talking about RAM or are you talking about the virtual memory as well?
hash
ive been experiencing the same problems with the latest versions.. viewing a few websites and the memory usage keeps climbing.... ive played with the memory management option with no luck... right now opera is sitting pretty at 62MB.. and it wont go down until i close opera and retart it. im on a fresh install of XP also, just by coinsidence not trying to solve this problem... yet the problem still exists. so its definately something they did with the opera code. if i reverted back to an older version of opera the problem would go away, but why would i want to do that? Pallab
How much memory do you have? Opera would use free memory if it is available. There is no point in having loads of free memory. It is taking 70MB out of 512MB here with 5 tabs open. But, you can reduce the memory that it uses up by reducing Memory Cache (Tools-->Pref-->Advanced-->History). If CPU usage is high that is abnormal. Some general performance tips : http://operawiki.info/OperaPerformance
hash
my memory cache is set to 4mb, it makes no difference. at times ive seen opera go as high as 120mb and i literally had to kill the process because it wasnt responding (i had 512mb at the time, now 1gb)
shoust
Plugins can ramp up the memory usage quite a bit, I suggest you turn plugins on only for sites you trust, as some flash apps can really make a meal out of opera,

Never thought about it or worried about it..seems fine to me, altho I do have 2 gigs of ram. I really dont have a point here, just some stats to compare and contrast and whatnotski. Whoops, it went down to 42mb as I typed this.

Mohsin Naqi
10 tabs - 104mb/1gig My problem is that Opera keeps freezing while a page is loading or has just finished loading. It comes out of frozen state after 4 or 5 seconds, but its really annoying.
htwho
Memory Leeeeeeeeeeak. Try clearing out your cache and reloading those pages. I suggest using www.ccleaner.com (free) Hopefully, that would solve the problem. If it doesn't, then come back and tell and we'll take it from there. Orien
Change the memory cache setting in Tools - Preferences - Advanced - History from "Automatic" to something like 20.
cozappz
Change the memory cache setting in Tools - Preferences - Advanced - History from "Automatic" to something like 20. This leads to some weird behaviour: for some webpages, the memory usage grows up to ~200MB while the CPU usage stays at 100%. After the ~200 MB is reached, the CPU usage falls under 5% and the memory usage falls to 30MB.
Lovell
None of the suggestions here helped, but the problem went away when I installed 9.50 and now it's just like it used to be :alien:
