tym
I for the last few years have off and on messed with internet optimizers. I am pretty sure I tried just about all of them. Free, paid. Tried this browser, that browser. Messed around from time to time. Fellow opera users can understand this, latest version has had a bit of a hanging problem. First I tried tcp optimizer, helped a bit. Then I gave cablenut a shot. Used the defaults it came with it. Helped opera out even more. Hit the cablenut forums, did a bit of work, posted in one of the forums what they wanted. Some guy posted back with what settings to set cablenut at. HOLY MAN OH MY!! Yea it was that big of difference. I keep copies of opera, firefox, maxthon, maxthon 2 on my computer just to compare speeds. See if its the browser or my connection. While yea, im a geek, when it comes to tweaking connections im pretty much clueless. I will be the first to admit it. Now I am not gonna bash any browser. They are all nice. Have there good points, weak points. For me, my connection and computer opera works best at the present time. No matter what browser you have give cablenut a shot, no matter what connection you use. It really made a huge difference on my connection. Just wanted to pass this along.

stevrons
Thanks for the info, have considered trying a new browser as IE is sometimes slow, was considering Firefox but maybe I'll also take a look at Opera.
CPressland
If anyone is finding web browsing slow, try OpenDNS! that gives you a massive advantage over other uses and you dont need to install anything :p
primexx
smells like advertising How is this Open DNS thing though? Edited August 21, 2007 by Primexx
CPressland
LMAO, It's not advertising, it's advice. If I were advertising then I'd upload a Picture with me holding giant stars going, USE NOW! Anyway, that aside. We'll use Neowin as an example, on my default DNS server Neowin takes 7 seconds to load, on OpenDNS it takes 2 seconds. You be the judge :p
Impact
I also use opendns and I love it. Much faster and easier to remember the DNS IPs than my Comcast ones. The DNS IPs for opendns are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
halcyoncmdr
I use OpenDNS as well, much faster than Comcast :)
CPressland
NTL (Virgin Media) in the UK are terrible. Dont even bother with XBOX Live if you're using the NTL DNS servers. After setting up my router for OpenDNS Lag became much less noticable and web browsing in general was finaly pleasent

Dogan
If you still use Opera, try this Try this:opera:config - Performance -- Max Connections Server: 16 -- Max Connections Total: 64 -- Network Buffer Size: 32 -- Uncheck --> Reduce Max Persistent HTTP Connections Also, Go to Tools --> Preferences --> Advanced --> Browsing --> Try Redraw instantly (loading zone) Have fun! :) from: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=488311
primexx
I think he was talking about the topic starters post (Y) yea back to this OpenDNS though.... What are the default (no account registered) settings that they use? Do they filter anything if you just point your DNS to their IP? How about anonymity, privacy, stuff like that? CPressland
Everything is exactly the same on OpenDNS internet wise, only faster. They do filter some very dangerous websites and have a complete list of these on their site Oh, and No, you dont have to setup an account. Just login to your router and paste the IP addresses into the DNS servers section.
halcyoncmdr
You only need to setup an account if you want the special features like website blocking or dynamic ip setups... and registering is free :)

shakey_snake
+1 for OpenDNS My ISP was haveing massive DNS issues, but OpenDNS is much of an improvement even if you ISP isn't. Anyone (using windows) interested in further increasing browsing speed needs to try the latest K-Meleon. The interface can be a bit of a bitch as most customizations need to be scripted, but it is so fast
