Wrong Ad Number Brings Couple Headaches

Recommended Posts

PITTSFORD, Vt. (AP) -- John and Patricia O'Connell don't own a BMW but people all over the country think they do. Hundreds of people have been calling them hoping to buy a 2005 BMW 325i.

The O'Connells' telephone number mysteriously showed up in newspaper classified ads on the Internet, and the calls are driving them crazy.

The couple said they get a dozen telephone calls a day from as far away as Oklahoma, Utah and Kansas.

The first came from someone in Asbury Park, N.J., and John O'Connell was able to find out that the ad had been placed via e-mail using an Internet-based mail account.

The O'Connells suspect their number was hit randomly by some sort of automated system and don't think it's a prank.

They have turned down their ringer and changed their answering machine message, explaining the mix-up. But they don't want to resort to getting a new phone number.

''We've had it for close to 30 years,'' John O'Connell said. ''I don't know which would be more of a hassle -- changing the number or putting up with the calls until it's over.''
