Speeding: How fast before it's jail time?

Recommended Posts

Its all about cameras in my area. Smart cameras. They will record the time its taken you to get between two points, if its faster than what ever limit they set, ticket sent to your house.

swear in topgear a few years ago they found out that changing your lane screwed the camera over, or just pull up and have a chat on your phone or have a ciggy for 2 mins, then be on your way again, that would lower the speed average lol

loads of roads near me were dropped from 60 to 40 and the new signs were soon keeping company with gestapo cameras. on top of that we now have high street SS officers that hand out ?80 fines for dropping litter.

i think i should get a passport just to check what country i live in.

when I was in High School I got caught drag racing in front of it. 104MPH in a school zone. Ouch. 8 points and $750. in fines. License suspended for 6 months, no jail time though. Lost my insurance too.

About this time last year my dad got a letter through the post saying he had been caught doing 78mph in a 30  Luckily we noticed this was over the other side of the country to us, rang them up and they looked at the photo again and realised they had misread the number plate.

The letter wasn't mentioning points or fines or anything, it simply wanted him to confirm he was who he was so I guess that was going to be a straight ban for that bloke.

I know this is really an american thread, and I'm being pretty dense... But just out of curiousity - don't you people have cameras over there? I got confused becuase you seem to be more concerned with being 'pulled over' than anything else.

Normally in the UK it's dictated as about +10% of stated speed - for points+fine or warning/"safety awareness course" (if your lucky!). You normally only get jail time for 'death by dangerous driving', most offences are punishable by penalty points (up to 12/15) or disqualification (usually for 2-4 years). I could be wrong tho, any clarification would be helpful.

They don't use cameras much in the US. The constitutionality of them is still somewhat in question because of the "right to face your accuser". It's a state by state type thing.

Got some crazed drivers on Neowin 96 in a 65, running from cops in a bike, etc... glad none of you live near me.

haha. the cop made me take a sobriety test too. good thing i passed.

i am not gonna post what the fastest i have gone without being caught... probably would need an extinguisher to put out the flame if i do.

Drink driving, depending on how drunk and how fast, regardless of whether you hit anyone etc. can lead to jail time.

In 2002 a friend of mine was working in New Hampshire...

He was driving at 70 in a 45, a state tooper stopped him, he let him off without a ticket as soon as the officer knew he was from Ireland.

I know another irish guy was in court for drink driving in outside Boston. Court Judge threw out the case because he was Irish and a hard worher..

The only benefit to being Irish then! ;)

my use to be homeboy was caught doing 52mph over the speed limit (which is 65mph) and not only he went to jail that same night, but two weeks after, he had a court date and the judge put him in jail for another 7 days plus a fine. I didn't know how much the fine was cuz i was too busy laughing in court. I had to be escorted out. Plus he had to take driver school as well as community service(picking trash on the side of the freeway). I honestly dont feel sorry for the guy at all knowing he's a wreckless driver and got my car towed that night which I had to pay $600 out of my own pocket to get it back only to fine out somone had took my camera. grrr..... Anyway I speed once in a while but only when I feel like it's the right moment and im not endangering anyone around me. So I have never been caught speeding using that technique.

140k in a 80k zone.

He dropped it down to 95 in an 80 and I had to pay roughly $80 CAD. Good thing it wasn't about 100 feet further though, or I would have been going double the legal limit (140k in a 70k zone). They can take your license, arrest you, impound your car, and the fine is about $2000 CAD.

I've also done 285k in a speed test of a Ferrari 575M Maranello, but that was on a closed course ;)

... One, in fact, pointed out how hard it would be to even catch someone going over 120 from a stand-still (typical police cruiser would take 7 or so seconds just to get to 60 and at that point, the other car is still going 60mph faster)....

Not hard at all to catch them. Sound travels faster than any street car thus the one with the radio to dispatch will always win.

At least Km/h makes more sense than the english system.

Anyway, I'll re-iterate for those who don't understand

110mph in an 55, with 4 people in the car, plus a trunk full of random junk.. Wish the tire had been correctly balanced though, could have hit 125.

I've talked to a few friends of mine who are police officers and none of them had ever arrested anyone for speeding. But on the other hand, they've never caught someone going over 120mph. One, in fact, pointed out how hard it would be to even catch someone going over 120 from a stand-still (typical police cruiser would take 7 or so seconds just to get to 60 and at that point, the other car is still going 60mph faster).

I was a passenger in the car that got busted for doing exactly 120mph (most cars aren't supposed to go faster than 205 km/h in Canada (Transport Canada limit)). The idiot driver would go faster. I was telling him all the time "slow down,... slow down, moron, you gonna get busted!" and he did.

I don't think we were driving for more than 2-3 minutes at 180-200km/h speeds. It was at night on an empty road, so I guess it was pretty easy for cops to get us.

The driver got 4 points and ~250 dollar fine.

P.S. that was four years ago, I stopped talking to that guy since that incident. Recently I have found out that he died on heroine overdose about a year ago.

My brother and I did 103 mph across the Snake Pass in England in a 1.0 litre G reg Ford Fiesta.

The Snake pass being the one with all the speed cameras on ?

Im very cautious when speeding, haha. It doesnt make sense, but I only speed when theres no one really around me. Also, I try to avoid hot spots where Im pretty sure cops will be on duty. But (For anyone who lives in NJ) on the Garden State Parkway, Ive definetly done 110+. I actually hit 124 (In a Kia Rio) one day, just for fun. But Ive never had a speeding ticket. I know for sure here anything above 95 will give you a high chance of jail time.

Recently a cop pulled me over for doing 166km/hr in a 110km/hr zone :o.

I was on my CBR600f2 doing about 200km/hr, saw the police officer and tried to scratch off some speed quickly.

He let me off with a warning - saying I would've had 4 demerits on my record if he ticketed me.

Damn did I ever get lucky. That is actually the 4th time I have been pulled over in the few years I have been driving/riding. All have been warnings. Never got a ticket (knock on wood).

My friend got pulled for doing around 170 km/h i believe but he talked it out with the cop and dropped it down to 149 km/h with about $400~ fine. Apparerntly anything 150+ km/h results in getting ur licence taken away. I wouldn't quote me on that but sounds concrete.
