Speeding: How fast before it's jail time?

Recommended Posts

My friend got pulled for doing around 170 km/h i believe but he talked it out with the cop and dropped it down to 149 km/h with about $400~ fine. Apparerntly anything 150+ km/h results in getting ur licence taken away. I wouldn't quote me on that but sounds concrete.

They want to make a law in Ontario when speeding in excess of 50km/h over the limit will be treated as streetracing = criminal offence.

If its street racing, that means you can kiss your car goodbye.

swear in topgear a few years ago they found out that changing your lane screwed the camera over, or just pull up and have a chat on your phone or have a ciggy for 2 mins, then be on your way again, that would lower the speed average lol

What would be the point? You still get there in the same time, so you may as well just go the speed your supposed to instead of speeding, stopping for a cig, speeding again.

Anyway, was once pillion on a bike coming back from Hull. On the dual carriage way near home we were doing about 95mph, took a roundabout (A) at about 60, and sped off again. Got caught down the road a bit. My mate had 9 points already, so didn't need another 3. We talked to the cop, did a bit of bull**** about how he makes sure he doesn't speed too much anymore and his speedo only said 80, we were on our way to a funeral (which we actually were). The cop let us go with a flea in our ear.

If someone is charged with criminal offence, the car should be the least of that person's concerns :D

Several years ago got a ticket on New Years day for doing 95 in a 65, but the State Trooper dropped it down to 76 in a 65. I was in a P.O.S. '84 Ford Escort and when he said he clocked me doing 95 I laughed and said "in that"? So he gave me a break, also we had a little chat about not drinking and driving the night before (hence why I was late & speeding)

I generaly do around 10-15 over on city streets and 20-25 on the Highway.

The stories here are very entertaining :p I for one have never gotten anything as I drive sensibly and even though I am only 17 I have been driving for 5 years. (yes with no license) I Am planning on getting one next month or so.

My dad on the other hand got a ticket last year (first one in 10 years) for going 185mph on a 65 mph road. Yeah he was in a hurry :)

What was he driving? And I'm pretty sure that would be the case to get cuffs instead of a ticket.

It was a 200(7-8) rental mini. and he smashed the brakes JUST before the cop locked him at 155. Got a ticket but cuZ it hat been the first in forever and the the cop was nice (imagine that, a nice cop) he only ticketed him for $350+/-

Some of you people have driven at just amazing speeds :|. Well most I've ever gone is 180KM/H (thats about 112MPH) but I usually only drive 10-15KM/H over the speed limit (as dose 75% of the the population here) With the main speed limits being 50-100KM/H I'm usually driving 60-115KM/H.

Do you want me to believe that Mini can go 180mph? That's 289 km/h! Do you even understand how fast that is? And just for the record, Mini's (Cooper S) top speed is 140mph. Not to mention that rental companies are very likely to lower that too.

I quit speeding years ago. The older you get, the more aware of your life, and how precious it is.

We call speeders organ donors.

Probably talking in KM/H.

Americans normally don't do that.

You are correct on that point

I was not saying it was a Mini. I was saying it was a minature, ya know, compact car, 2-4 door, not to big. That kind of mini. Sorry I was unclear. and he DID go 180. It was on a REALLY long straight stretch.

Jack took a long look at his speedometer before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone. Fourth time in as many months. How could a guy get caught so often?

When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the cop worry about the potential traffic hazard. Maybe some other car will tweak his backside with a mirror. The cop was stepping out of his car, the big pad in hand.

Bob? Bob from Church? Jack sunk farther into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A cop catching a guy from his own church. A guy who happened to be a little eager to get home after a long day at the office. A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow.

Jumping out of the car, he approached a man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform.

"Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this."

"Hello, Jack." No smile.

"Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids."

"Yeah, I guess." Bob seemed uncertain. Good.

"I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit -just this once."

Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement. "Diane said something about roast beef and potatoes tonight. Know what I mean?" "I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our precinct ." Ouch. This was not going in the right direction. Time to change tactics.

"What'd you clock me at?"

"Seventy. Would you sit back in your car please?"

"Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was barely nudging 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.

"Please, Jack, in the car"

Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door.

Slamming it shut, he stared at the dashboard. He was in no rush to open the window.

The minutes ticked by. Bob scribbled away on the pad.

Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license?

Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this cop again. A tap on the door jerked his head to the left. There was Bob, a folded paper in hand Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip.

"Thanks." Jack could not

quite keep the sneer out of his voice.

Bob returned to his police car without a word. Jack watched his retreat in the mirror. Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost?

Wait a minute. What was this? Some kind of joke?

Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read:

"Dear Jack, Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed it- a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters, all three of them. I only had one, and I'm going to have to wait until Heaven before I can ever hug her again.

A thousand times I've tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I need to do it again. Even now. Pray for me. And be careful, Jack, my son is all I have left."

"Bob"

Jack turned around in time to see Bob's car pull away and head down the road. Jack watched until it disappeared. A full 15 minutes later, he too, pulled away and drove slowly home, praying for forgiveness and hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived.

4th of July (peeps in the US), be good tonight on the roads. At least here cops are everywhere, I'm sure that's how it is in every state. I think we are allowed 5mph above the speed limit. I usually try not to go over 80mph on the highway, it's so hard not too, lol. I was on my way home from dropping a friend off and cops had 2 people pulled over. I guess from speeding. They are pretty much looking for drunk drivers though, esp tonight/early morning.

I've never been pulled over by a cop (knock on wood). I've been through road blocks though. They don't really scare me, I'm not doing anything wrong. However, when I was 16-17, I was scared they would take my cigs away from me, so I would hide them before it was my turn to get my license checked, lol.

in the state of PA anything over 31+ mph over the posted speed limit officers have the right to take your drivers license right there not sure if theres any actual jail time involved with speeding just hefty fines and suspension or revocation of license

87mph in a 65mph (although ticket said 84, prolly to keep me in a better price bracket, cop was pretty friendly).

It was my 2nd ticket, cost me about $260 and 4 points on my license bringing my total to 6 pts (12 and it gets suspended, which it did later down the road. No pun intended ;) ).

Officer was a State Trooper, caught me on U.S. Highway 41, 4 lane median divided. They had an elaborate setup, cop up on an overpass clocking people and radio-ing to a cop ahead who was hiding under another dark overpass.

Took getting my license taken away before I learned my leason, lucily it wasn't at anyone elses expense...

Fastest I've driven was 117 MPH in my old car, 1995 Chrysler New Yorker.

I got a ticket years ago for going 70 on a 45 (speed trap, original speed was 65), but the fastest I've personally driven is 155MPH.

In the night, it was pretty crazy. Can't see myself ever going faster than that.

A question for you guys in the UK -

What happens if you're caught on camera using a rental car, and you're from out of the country?

How do they send a ticket...?

Just wondering.

Exactly.... Not even a Worx Mini Cooper S could hit 180mph !

I Doubt a Turbo Busa'd Mini could hit 180mph! and you always see loads of rental companies with those ;)

Not to mention probably every rental car is probably speed restricted to 155mph.

Aha. Knew it couldn't be that easy.

I have a feeling these cameras wouldn't be so well-received here in the US.

Do they get vandalized, shot at, etc. over there?
