Website Critique for English Project

Question

Situation: I have an A- in the class and my teacher decides that she wants to make it a contest. Any presentation method is allowed.

Task: Develop a travel brochure with your group to sell a vacation to one of the exotic locales that Odysseus visited.

1. You are a travel agent booking trips to the places Odysseus visited in Part One. Create a travel brochure describing one of the places.

2. Describe the physical environment, accommodations, and the different types of recreation and activities that are available.

3. Target an audience as you write your copy. Try to really sell this particular spot to a group of people who would enjoy it. Carefully outline the type of person who would enjoy this vacation. Make your presentation as enticing as possible.

Grading Critera:

Content =60 points

Presentation = 40 points

TOTAL = 100 POINTS!

My Words:

Please give me your thoughts about it. I know I need to work on the flash introduction; if anyone can help me work on it ... I would be grateful. Regarding the rest of the site, please look over the completeness of the content, any broken links, mispellings, etc. Be frank about what you say. I do not mind if I would offend me, I spent at least 30 hours on this project so I would not mind anything that will make it better. Do I need a better backgtound, banner ... go fire away. I am still working on parts of the content.

Thank you VERY much for your time.

opinions:

i don't like the scrolling text box for the copyright/site info at the bottom and i don't like the dotted line borders for the header. another reason to remove the box for the copyright info is that sometimes for me (using ie 6) it displays on top of the contents of the subppages.

you could use some photographs. no travel pamphlet/site/whatever is complete without some overly great pictures of the place being mentioned.

maybe some small descriptions of the "best restaraunts", like what they serve or what their specialty is.

maybe make some graphical headers? mindless drones like pretty graphics over facts ;)

The scrolling problem should be fixed, I was tweaking the css so that happened. It may also occur because of low screen resolution [800 by 600 or 1024 by 768].

I will look into the borders. I have yet to occur the second error, but again, I was tweaking the site.

Photos would simply be a bit hard as Hades is not exactly a definite place ...

Restaurant descriptions are coming, they just need to be linked.

Hopefully, my teacher is not a mindless drone, now is she? :) LOL

I would get rid of the intro page. Either have an intro or don't. Has anyone viewed the page with Phoenix? The copywrite box is way out of place. Also in phoenix, the "Home, Environment, Hotels, etc" box makes me scroll down to see the "contact us" link

Ok it's not just phoenix giving those problems. Same thing happens with IE6.

Pics would definately help. At least some interpretations of what Hades may look like. More color too. Black and white is kinda boring. It's hard enough to try to get someone to willingly go to Hades, but having it kinda bland like that will keep the rest of the peoples away. Throw some red in there.

Technical: try out the page in Phoenix. I don't know if the teacher / marker will be using Phoenix or Mozilla, but here are a few oddities on your page when viewing in Phoenix:

? the image isn't completely shown

? the Events page doesn't have any border on the right

Untechnical:

? re-arrage the example restaurants under "Best Restaurants". Currently, the longer names are first and it looks like you were running out of ideas, using shorter and less thought out names

? there is no space between the ">>" and Restaurants (it reads Home >>Restaurant, instead of Home >> Restaurant)

? that "Home >> Restaurant" label should be "Home >>snts"

? why are the subcategories links (Home >> Subcategory) if you're already on that page?

The only reason I could think of to allow that to happen if you were viewing it in a window or on a low screen res as the page is relative. I am thinking about a color scheme atm.

Mozilla has a problem with the picture, I am not sure what, but it is the only browser code base that does that.

It doesnt understand pixel amounts very well either so I find it useless to pursue a problematic browser. I checked in mozilla 1.3alpha and there is no missing border.

I will get the untechnical changed asap.

@hurting - That problem seems to be nonexistent with the browser, can you refresh and see if it still happens?

Assuming you weren't talking to Smifffy (and wrote the wrong name) and assuming you meant the second problem, here's screenshot of the Events page in Phoenix:
