Hurmoth
Owners of Apple's iPhone are beginning to receive their first monthly bill from AT&T since the new purchase and are discovering a number of mistakes on the wireless carrier's part. Most notably, AT&T is not removing prior data plans, charging users $20 for the iPhone data, as well as up to $50 for their previous package.Although Apple pulled off what many characterized as the biggest product launch of the decade without a hitch, things have not gone so smoothly on AT&T's side. Limited stock, activation delays and now double billing surely won't help reassure those who have switched, or are looking to switch, to the carrier. BetaNews calls to AT&T customer service went unanswered, as the company only has support staff working 7am to 9pm during the week and no one to help at all on Sunday. Bawx
With everything I'm hearing, it's sounds like owning an iPhone costs about $1000-1500 for the first month.
jwjw1
AT&T has always had 'screwed up' billing and the most confusing to understand...its as if they make it that way so most won't call and take the 'shafting'.....I've called several times on a screwed up DSL plan...and given credit....people don't realize..even if ATT over-charges 2 cents...most people won't bother..but then multiply that by the Millions of customers and its quit a big bonus for the executives..... They definitely should have gone CDMA, but at the very least they should have chosen somebody other than AT&T.
benac
Cingular is awesome, and T-Mobile even is decent.. Cingular owns AT&T. "Cingular is now the new AT&T". They also bought bellsouth I believe, so they have the largest cell and landline network now. I would get an iPhone if I had that much money to play with. Hurmoth
They didn't pick AT&T they picked Cingular and then it was bought by AT&T.Thats how it went right? AT&T merged with Cingular back in 2004, long before Apple announced the iPhone. They started the integration late last year, early this year. I talked with a few people that worked for these cell companies and said its a known issue and tactic. If they're ever caught, it was a "mistake". In this era of paperless automatic billing, this is a cash cow for them.

Correct, Cingular announced in February 2004 that it would purchase AT&T Wireless Services, Inc., for $41 billion.
SnowRanger13
A bit off topic but why dose everyone say CDMA is better then GSM (or GPRS or what ever it is called). Personally I find GSM coverage to be the best where I live but I'm in Canada and I'm sure the coverage in the US is widely different. I also really like SIM cards, be able to switch to any unlocked phone or any phone locked to your network is pretty handy. I don't know how many times my phone would be dead (I always forget to charge the thing) and I need a number, I'm with my friends and one of them has a GSM phone, I put my SIM card in his phone make the call and everything is awesome! I know EVDO Rev A is faster then EDGE but is that the main reason they like CDMA or is there other reasons?

No. They were integrated before late last year and early this year. They had merged and SBC kept the Cingular name, but then SBC bought out ALL of AT&T and Bell South (owner of Cingular) and they decided they will change their name to at&t, as its known world wide and SBC was not. So, they decided that they should have everything under one brand. So, Cingular was re-named to at&t and thats it. Just a name change....I miss Cingular though. Cingular > at&t! Overall quality and speed of CDMA kicks GSM out the door, but GSM is more widely used worldwide. Coverage may be better for you with GSM, but that's simply because it's more widely supported. Really... now I have no doubt that GSM is more widespread here but the really funny thing you say CDMA can penetrate buildings better. My girlfriend is on CMDA and on my the main floor of my house she gets 3 bars and I get 4 (obviously because of there is a GSM tower closer) but when we go down two floors (the house is a 4 level split). I have 2-3bars and she has 0-1 I can still make calls fine but her phone cuts out. I guess we lost the same signal so it's not really a fair test but if it dose better at going though buildings I would of thought she would of gained some ground in the basement instead of loosing the same as me. sbarn
Do you work for them? I know I am right as all the news articles I read have said so in the past. No you're wrong. Read howardforums if you must. Cingular (owned jointly at the time by SBC and Bellsouth) bought AT&T WIRELESS customers in 2004, but not the name, it went pretty much out the window. More recently SBC bought AT&T the entire company and changed their name to it b/c of how well-known it supposedly is. THEN even more recently, SBC/AT&T bought Bellsouth which gave them full ownership of Cingular and in effort to unite everything, they changed Cingular's name to at&t and internally its designated as AT&T Mobility.
