Neowin causes my browser to have 90+% CPU Usage

Recommended Posts

Only happens in forums. The worst is when i choose to edit the 1st post of a topic (it stucks when "Loading attachments") and I can't even choose another tab, and when using the quick reply.

I use Adblock and NoScript in Firefox but they are disabled in Neowin.

I have this problem too in IE7, the CPU usage gets less when i minimize the recent posts part on the top of the page. This slowdown started happening as soon as that part was added back in.

OK, here is the problem. It happens on some forums, and on the main page. Since the recent changes to the site and the scanning of updates at the top of the page 'Recent Main News' & 'Recent Forum posts'.

I see in the JS Console (using Console2) the following errors ever few secs. The more tabs you have open on Neowin the worse it gets and its eating CPU cycles.

I am using Minefield dev builds, but I"m sure this is what others are seeing as well.

Bad coding maybe:

EDIT: Also reported here: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=573416

While it may seem harmless, its eating CPU cycles.

EDIT 2: Just found out you can kill the errors and the polling by clicking the - (minus) sign next to the 'Quick Links' button. FYI

Interesting problems have to say sometimes the forum pushes the cpu up but thats only if the thread has alot of pictures...

Same here. Only since the changes with the topic view were made. It freezes IE at work on the dodgy computers too. No Neowin at work anymore :-(

No problems here  I use FF all the time with Neowin.

As noted earlier in the thread, I bet your using NoScript also, that hides the problem.

It must be your configurations because I don't have any problems. I use FF 2.0.0.4

Seriously though. It's weird how one setup causes errors and the other doesn't. Doesn't make it easy to debug

I have this rarely. I also have it that it takes forever to load Neowin pages. FF 2.0.0.4 under Ubuntu, with DownThemAll and Reload Every attached.

Firefox 2.0.0.4 here with NoScript and no problem.

I have "neowin.net" and "googlesyndication.com" enabled in no script, but anything else disabled.

No problems here either, and I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.4 with NoScript (I only have scripts from Neowin allowed, and nothing else... no ads.neowin.net, or google-analytics)

actually, i just noticed this problem recently as well.

right now, firefox is using over 100mb of ram and cpu usage is jumping erratically from 0 to 30%. the strangest part is that it's not loading anything. it's just sitting there.

i just tried a quick test. i closed all the neowin tabs and cpu usage dropped to 0 (jumping every now and then to 3% or so). i restarted firefox and closed all the non-neowin tabs and cpu usage jumped around between 5 and 25%.

Adblock will do this, if you're blocking Neowin.

Yes, I have Neowin whitelisted and thus I have no problems.

Neowin does not use the kinds of ads that I find really annoying and I like to support my favourite sites.

Adblock is fine for the times that I type goggle instead of google or the like.

Nope, I am using the default firefox install (with some standard menu options changed of course) under Windows Vista 32-bit / XP Pro with the following Addon's installed: Adblock Filterset.G Updater, Adblock Plus, Flashgot, and Undo Closed Tabs Button.

Undo Closed Tab Button. Switch that to Tab Mix Plus and you'll be in bliss.

I've had the same issue with ff a few times.

these are the ff extensions i have installed:

Adblock FilterSet.G Updater

Adblock Plus - http://*neowin.net/* is on the whitelist

DOM Inspector

ScreenGrab

Adblock Plus and FilterSet.G cause a lot of problems when paired together.

I'd like to see what extensions the users who are having issues have installed in Firefox.

I'm using the nightly Minefield releases with a multitude of extensions and no problems at all. People can use the MR Tech Local Install to do a fun little trick. Tools > My Config > Copy - BBCode (Clipboard) and then paste everything their Firefox is using. Including extensions. It would be very helpful to debunk the issue at hand.
