Neowin causes my browser to have 90+% CPU Usage

Recommended Posts

It can't be Neowin because when the area is collapsed it simply does not update in the background, reducing network traffic to your PC from Neowin.

I also have no CPU jumps when it updates on my system, it will of course use CPU time so that your PC can display the new content.

i don't know what to say man.. you can see that im not the only one.

* why Fred Derf closed the thread and now its open? .... what's going on? we can only praise neowin but we're not allowed to discuss the bugs?

I posted [Thread Cleaned] not [Thread Closed]

Somebody trolled the thread and I did a clean up to keep it on topic.

I'm assuming it's the Latest Forum Activity causing the problem because I've only known it happen since it was introduced. Basically, sometimes, not often, when I load up neowin (only noticed on forum pages, not the homepage) it'll load most the page and then firefox will come up with a message saying something about a script on the site has done something stupid, should I stop the script of continue. Obviously that isn't the exact error message, but it doesn't give any useful debugging info anyway...I'll update this thread when it happens again with the exact message.

Before the message comes up though, firefox stops responding according to task manager and the firefox window icon turns to that white box...meaning it's having issues.

Using Firefox 2.0.0.6 on Win XP.

i wanted to say that since i did minimise the autoupdate part, opera works fine. but now you say you have made some javascript changes i shall give it another go ! :D

You can also leave it open but disable the auto update feature. That way you still have the recent topics on top (they'll refresh when browsing to another page)

CPU usage is fine here, using firefox on XP (although I have got a couple of times where the whole page has just refreshed without me doing anything (as in completely reloading the page as if I had pressed F5))

Thats weird, I never get this problem. You could try switching the Latest forum activity off. There's a small minus button next to "Quick Links" , click that. If you still have problems after that, then I doubt its because of the Latest Forum Activity.

Some changes were recently made to the code. Use Ctrl-F5 to ensure that you are using the latest scripts.

In addition to minimizing the entire section, you can also leave the section visible but just click on the "Stop" link. That way it will still be updated every time you visit a new page but it won't autoupdate once you are reading a thread.

If you are having problems with the automatic recent thread updates then you can disable the feature by pressing the "Stop" link. You can also hide the entire Recent Forum Posts section by pressing the +/- button.

I don't have a problem but then I don't tend to browse Neowin with multiple tabs open (at least not multiple copies of Neowin).

I had this problem yesterday with 2.0.0.5 - but everything seems to be fine now.

Usual drill guys - please clear your cache and try it again.

Yep. That new thing up top is freezing my browser ('Not responding' type freeze - not just a delay). Seems to happen only when I click one of the links though.
