Neowin causes my browser to have 90+% CPU Usage

Recommended Posts

A cache-refresh seemed to fix it, but it happened again today. Clicking on the "stop" link seems to have worked though, so I'll guess i'll keep it stopped for now.

Yep, same here. Just visiting the forum index in Firefox v2.0.0.6 causes the script error.

It's being looked into and possibly fixed, right?

Right. Disable the autoupdates by clicking the "Stop" link and press Ctrl-F5 every day or so to ensure that you have the latest scripts rather than something old from your cache. Clearing your cache every day or so should do the same trick.

I get the stall and unresponsive script error on the forum index each time I go to it. (FF 2.0.6, no relevant extensions.)

But I'm not willing to clear my cache every day to avoid it.

My Macbook was also having problems recently. Seemed fine today, but i did get a message telling me about a non-responisve script.
Same thing happened here whenever I opened a link that had the forum activity script at the top. It only seemed to happen on one of my firefox profiles so I just cleared the cache+cookies for Neowin and it started working again :)

Same here. But going to an older theme without the Latest Forum Activity script seemed to solve the problem. It's a shame though, I kinda liked the Latest Forum Activity thing... ah well. ;)

Dave just gave me a temp fix, just changed forum theme. Seems to work.

There are many temp fixes.

1. Click the "Stop" link.

2. Minimize the header

3. Use another theme

4. Upgrade to a dual-core CPU

Haha, I do have a dual-core CPU and sometimes Neowin hangs, regardless (though interestingly enough, not always). And yes, I do have the header enabled.

I also have a dual-core CPU and it will hang at times (not every time, but its relatively frequent).

But, come on now, upgrade to a dual-core CPU just to get a script working on a site?

Option #4 was not a serious suggestion. I'm sure the coderators are diligently coderating a solution to this conundrum.

I think this has now been resolved. If you could all clear out your caches, switch back to the shift theme (if you changed away to avoid it), and let me know if it's now working for you or not.

For some reason the "Start" button on the script doesn't work. I've tried clearing all the cache, and tried it in IE7 and FX2.0.0.6 and it still won't start for me. I'm referring to the script on the forum pages that shows the most recent posts. The "Show more" button does work.

I had the same issue this afternoon. Another small tweak was made to the script, you will need to clear out your neowin cookies to re-enable the functionality.

I just tried doing that and it's still not working. :( I'm going to try and delete my FX profile to see if that's what's causing it.

Okay I tried that and here's what happened. I checked to see if it was working, and it was, so I logged in. It was working fine until I tried to click "Stop" and then "Start" again - after that it stopped working. If there's anything else you want me to try, or that I could try, let me know. :p
