The best place to try first is Samurize. There are tutorials there and a good community to help you get yourself started.

The best way that I learned was by looking at different examples of configurations (the ones that came with the install and downloading others off the site) to get a hang of how to use it and customize it. I'm still a noob by most people's standards probably but I'm glad I took the time to try it out.

My first config is based on Dego 5.0

First square: start-button (not part of config ;))

Second square: show desktop

Third square: cpu | ram

Fourth square: upload | download

Do you mean the "Windows" Icons? My Computer, My Documents, etc?

You simply right click your desktop and untick Show Desktop Icons :)

right-click the tray icon and look at the placement options. you uncheck them (except for the 'normal behavior' option, whatever it's called), drag it to where you want it, then pin it to the desktop and lock the location.
