Compiz No Borders! HELP! PLEASE!

Recommended Posts

I have been trying for what feels like forever to get this compiz-fusion stuff to work. I installed it using this installer. And whenever I start the compiz it immediately takes my window borders away and I can't really do anything untill I log out or Change to metacity or Kwin as the Windows Manager. Emerald Theme doesn't work for some reason but I have Emerald theme manager installed. But when in Kwin or metacity the compiz options and such don't work. I am so desperate. I don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated!

I had the exact same issue for hours yesterday. Make sure your xorg.conf file has been setup completely. Check the Ubuntu forums for ATi or nVidia specific issues. What finally fixed it for me was installing the Gnome Compiz manager.

sudo apt-get gnome-compiz-manager

Enable Compiz (you're probably doing this through System > Preferences >Desktop Effects?) then run the newly installed manager via System > Preferences > GL Desktop. Re-enable Metacity via the checkbox and you're problems should be gone :)

Hope this works for you! I spent all day installing & removing Berl, Compiz, Compiz-Fusion, the initial desktop-effects package (old Compiz built in to Ubuntu) and reconfiguring (and crashing) the Xserver before finding out this trick on my own. Good luck.

E: Invalid operation gnome-compiz-manager

That's what I get when I put in the above code. I enable compiz threw Applications>System Tools>Compiz Fusion Icon. But, whenever I tried to use the compiz that comes with ubuntu my screen would just completely blank. You think that has anything to do with it? I feel like it might be my video card and I downloaded a driver but I can't install it.

This is what I had to do.

edit your xorg.conf

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add this under the device section

Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

Shouldn't that be:

sudo apt-get install gnome-compiz-manager

See the "install" part.
