Graphic Designers Need For Tatoo

Question

Alright, I am going to get a Tatoo in the next week or so, but I don't have the exact design. I know that I want it to be of a maple leaf (as in the Canadian flag). However, a simple maple leaf is really boring, I need something more, like:

-- a sylized maple leaf

-- shadows to give it a 3D look

-- a sketched maple leaf

something, that gives it some character and is not a boring plain ole maple.

I have spent the last few years trying to find a design that I like, but haven't come up with anything.

So, I am applealing to you guys with graphic design abilities.

It is going to be about a 2-3" tatoo in black. I am involved in technology, so if you can hint about that in the design that would be awesome.

So, what's in it for you? Well, I will take the design that I pick and put it in my neowin sig with credit to the author and indicate that it is tatooed on my body.

This shouldn't take very long for acomplished graphic designers....

Yeah, I guess it is, but the way I look at it I put together the idea, concept, and meaning and basic design, but since I have no graphic ability, I am hoping someone can assist with that.

Also, it isn't like I don't have final say -- If I don't like any of them, then I don't need go through with it.

Anyway, judging by the amount of responses, I don't think I'll have any suggestions...

Definitely go see your tattoo artist about it. They can tell you what it will look like when it's complete and what will look best. Remember, it's there forever. I've got a number of tattoos and I think I spent no less than a couple of months looking at the design everyday before I actually went through with it for each one. Just a suggestion.

Yeah, I didn't want to rely on the tattoo guy to be able to draw what I wanted. I was hoping to be able to look at it prior to having to make a decisoin.

Here's what I am thinking. An outline of a maple leaf filled with binary pattern in a blurred way, i.e. not clean crisp, but blurred into the edges....

See, I have some ideas, but I just dont' ahve the artistic ability to put my ideas into a picture

Who said you had to make a decision if you consult your tatto artist... He can make a mockup on paper and tweak it till your satisfied before even touching your skin... just tell them what you want. I have a few tats i designed 1 of my own but i also rely on my tattoo artist make sure he's good at what he does.

- it really isnt a job for some kid with PS, remember its on you for life!

well i think he just wants to see what he is thinking....have something to look at. then if he likes it he can take it to his tat artist and have any changes he wants done or whatever. but maybe something to give a general idea....cause really think about it, how many tatoo artists are really gonna know what binary code is when you tell them. lol

If I was you, I wouldn't accept anything from the people on this site, no offence, but they do not know the aspects of what can be done with a tatoo needle, you can't add drop shadows, motion blurs, outer glows, or beveled effects to a tatoo. Just let a professional do it, don't ask for help here because your tat artist will just laugh at you.

That Canadian flag whoever made that in photoshop, practice more in photoshop. You're designs will never become a tatoo with the filters and effects you are adding.

mat987 was correct - If I someone can take my idea and put it into a picture and then I can tweak that and THEN talk to a Tatoo artist about what can and can't work in a Tatoo.

mat987 --- I really liked the black and white one. bluerei is correct, Tatoo isn't a fine art done in 100DPi, rather a dull pen --- So the blurrs and the colors won't work. However, I really liked where you were going with the black and white one. Can you do some variations on that one?

Everybody is freaking out on me, who said that what happens in this topic decides what happens in real-life? Me. Just because I solicited advice doens't mean I gave up the decision. I am looking for ideas, if I find something that matchs what I had in mind, then great, otherwise I will keep looking.

Thanks to everyone -- I know this is a weird request, but you guys have been great and given me a lot to think about...

Good point - However, I heard that color is much more expensive and doesn't look as nice after a few years and it fades.

Anyone know for sure?

mat987 - Can you do one like the black one in Red?

You heard wrong. Black is the easiest faded colour. There are colours that are harder to get as bold, but boy black fades fast. Trust me, I have a 3.5 hour arm band in all black and it's not even been a year and I can notice a big difference.

I agree with bluerei you really should go talk to them first.. but bluerei is wrong on one point it is possible to do certain types of effects with a tattoo needle, drop shadows for one are very possible.

It doesn't hurt too bad, its just kind of like getting pricked by the edge of a razor blade for a long time... here is my latest tattoo.

It is possible for a tattoo artist to do shading. The tattoo that I have on my should has quite a bit in it acutally. There is a blend from white ink to yellow and into red. Also the one that I have on my back has some blends from red to black. But we're very lucky in Fredericton to have a very talented tattoo artist at Red Lion Tattooing.

I'll add in to the does it hurt section. It depends where. The poster showing his tat above has it in a good spot for little pain. My band goes 360 degrees around my arm. Under the arm close to the pit is where it really does begin to hurt. My GF knows bikers who both got bands but they do not go all the way around they stop on each side under the arm and they will not get them finished. All the tattoo artists where I got mine done said that is the worst spot. Hence many people do not have bands that go right under the arm, you can't tell from the side but get them to lift up there arm ;)
