Computer randomly restarts

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

My computer is top notch and i can play all the latest games and everything works great on it. Now for some reason, my computer has just started to restart randomly. It does it when im surfing the web, playing a game, or if im not using the computer at all(when i go back to my pc it shows the windows login). Basically, it shows a bsod(some blue screen) then restarts. I don't know what's wrong, i have all three fans running on my computer, and i keep my zalman heatsink/fan(for cpu) on high, so it couldn't be an overheating problem. Anyone, if you know what's happening, please tell me because this can get very annoying and is a problem when i am doing work on my PC.

Thank you,

That happened to me.. video card problem apparently.. but figured out there was a small hard drive problem which in turn caused a problem with the drivers.. I got a new hard drive and installed Ubuntu..

you can disable the automatic restart so that you have time to read the BSoD by going to ctrl panel>system>advanced>startup and recovery settings and uncheck "automatic restart" under system failure.

I think I know your problem if its what I think its Nvidia. What you need to do is remove from your something like Nvidia system panel. WARNING YOU MUST HAVE YOUR RESTORE DISC you need it to repair the computer if your having problems try calling your company and ask for assistance or just do a complete restore. I would like to know what computer you got too.

I took your advice and did that, and this is what my BSOD said:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time this has happened, please restart your computer.

If not, Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a drive is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for drivers updates. Try changing video adapters."

There was some other stuff, but it was just numbers and random letters but that's basically it, anyone? please help.

I forgot to put in one thing, after it says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."

It then says "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT"

This is an 0x4E Stop Error: either corrupt video drivers or bad RAM. If using newest video drivers, try older version, if using old version, try newer version. OR, try swapping out your RAM- if using 2 stix, remove one of them and try until error, when error (BSOD) remove that stick and install other, depending on what type RAM you have.....

More than likely bad RAM.

ATI Radeon Xpress.. but that wasn't the problem.. there was a problem with the hard drive!

Ouch, blue screens are a pain in the arse. With my expirence BSOD are either driver or heat issues. How long has your computer been doing this? Have you updated any drivers recently? If so try going back to an older driver version. Also, like mentioned above it wouldn't hurt to run a mem check.

I recommend you download Memtest86. It's a DOS program, so when you download it, burn it to a CD or copy it to a disk. Then restart your computer and it should boot into the Memtest program. You want to let it do as many passes as possible, I usually let it run all night while I sleep. If you don't get any errors then you can usually rule out your memory.

Another thing to check is your temperatures. A few years back I was getting a nasty BSOD all teh fregin' time. I tried everything. Finally I decided to check the temperatures in teh case, come to find out I had blown a transistor... X_X, lol. Luckily all I had to do was replace the Mobo, everything else was fine.

:Edit:

Also, do what was suggested in a previous post. Turn auto-restart off. Next time you get the BSOD, right the error down. Knowing the contents of the error will help you a lot.
