Is there such a thing as iTunes Lite? :)

Question

My iPod arrives tomorrow(!) and whilst I'm partly looking forward to getting it, and re-installing iTunes, I remember it being an absolutely huge resource hog, as well as installing a load of additional, un-needed junk like Quicktime, iPodHelper, iTunesHelper etc that consistently run in the background.

I'd like to avoid this if possible, my new PC arrives today(!) and I want to keep it junk free as much as possible :)

Cheers!

The things you mention aren't unneeded if you intend to actually use iTunes as an interface for your iPod. iTunes uses Quicktime to play media files. iPod helper is necessary for it to interface with the iPod. I can't remember exactly what iTunes helper does though.

Check out this page http://picsbook.net/shark007/index.html

It will only install iTunes, no quicktime and no software updater thing

Did you actually read the description for those iTunes packages? You still have to have Quicktime installed for them to work, they just don't install Quicktime themselves.

My advice: Forget about Itunes... use Foobar2000 with quicksearch plugin. Or use Winamp 5.5 or WMP 11.

For your Ipod synchronization needs, there are also lots of alternatives (use WMP or Winamp, or get at program like Floola or Vpod.

Why get a program doesn't let you have full control and erases files from your Ipod, if you no longer have them in your library??

why would you get rid of stuff from your library and still want it on your ipod :/

Id definately use iTunes for a iPod, I personally think you will just enjoy it alot more, plus its made for it dude.

Although I dont know what iTunes is like on the PC, on mac it is definatly far from a resource hog...

I've always wondered about that myself, yet similar comments seem to come up every time someone asks about iTunes. It seems that these people feel that they should only have their music on one device or the other, so they want to MOVE the files from their computer onto their portable player permanently. I guess these kinds of people don't believe in having a backup.

Quoted for good advice!

Check out the 'FooTunes' theme which is iTunes interface in Foobar2000.

Cheers guys, I've tried loads of players; iTunes, Winamp, Foobar, MediaMonkey, SongBird, jRiver etc over the last couple of years, and from a usability point of view I really love iTunes :)

I'll grab it from that link above many thanks, maybe install iPodHelper seperately sometime, but regarding QuickTime I much prefer Quicktime Alternative

I use Winamp with ml_ipod. Works amazingly well for me - much better suited to my usage that iTunes ever was.

I use foobar along with Floola and they're great! Does everything I need it do without installing bloatware itunes!

I would gladly switch off of itunes because i can tell you that in windows (both xp and vista) at least for me, it uses a TON of memory and continues to eat it up even after I close it.

The ONLY thing stopping me is the lack of bookmarking mp3 files for my audiobooks in other clients.

I don't want to have to convert all of my mp3 books into m4b books.

Does anyone know of an itunes alternative that will allow me to have the mp3 file remember it's playback position, because as soon as i can have that, i will throw itunes out the door.

Could you give it a go with the x64 package and PM me?

I don't use iTunes myself, I use Floola, but I have another two PC's in the house which do use iTunes.

Having a lite version of it would be great for those PCs - They are a bit slower than mine and suffer from the bloat iTunes installs.

Thanks (Y)

(the copy on MSFN Vexii talks about is not up to date, and I don't think it removes the services. Just Quicktime)

It will be updated today or tomorrow because the guy who is making itunes lite is on dial-up so it takes time to upload new versions...I think that helper services stays but you could always disable it if you want. PS sorry for my bad english

Since you suggested winamp anyway, winamp has GREAT ipod support, works perfectly syncing my Ipod video.
