Whats the best way to learn PHP?

Question

Hi there all, before I ask my question I would like to say I have a good understanding of HTML, CSS, Flash MX.

I would like to make my webpage interactive now with a forum and news bulliten.

I want users and preferences (like custom style sheets etc).

However, I know nothing about MySQL and PHP - apart from the concepts. Whats the best way to start learning PHP, has anyone got some tips for mistakes they have made.

I'm looking for perhaps an online resource, (thats how i learned everything else).

In the future I also want to learn XML as Flash MX can use this to build advanced menus (ive used some of its basic principles)

thx for ur time :D

as explosive points out, php.net is an invaluable source, and certainly once you are doing any sort of php work, can become a daily visit due to it's useful php.net/function_name lookup capability. however, i'd have to also suggest the breadth of sites on php.net's links page, there's a few sites like phpbuilder.com, etc that not only provide tutorials but also have small forums for help.

above all this, i'd suggest buying an o'reilly book (preferably the one by the author of php (rasmus lerdorf) - http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/progphp/ .

if you're looking for an immediate start, have a look at the php / mysql tutorial on webmonkey.com.

good luck! it's an extremely powerful tool, php.
