Theres got to be a way to disable this in firefox...

Ok first off, the dictionary in Firefox is down right horrible. But that isnt even the issue here. I want to be able to use spell check in certain places and have it disabled in others. For example, i dont want it in Gmail because not everyone types with correct spelling when dealing casually with friends. And when we do need to, Gmail has a pretty quick spell check feature. Also places like Facebook and Myspace no one types in full grammar, punctuation and spelling. So its annoying to have little red lines everywhere.

My main problem was in Google Docs, i dont always type in English, i have my own shorthand. So every god damn word is underlined. I want to be able to disable spell check on only certain sites, while still having it enabled.

There has to be an extension or Greasemonkey scipt for this...anyone share similar view on this?

i never had those problems with the spell checker in firefox. Only times when i get the red marks are when i am making an post or typing in an email

well, yea they only come up when typing, but i type a lot...and dont want spell checker all the time correcting my mistakes in places such as IMing clients (that are in your browser) or Myspace Comments.

Ignore them? Or just add your shorthand to the dictionary. Then they won't bother you again.

add shortcuts for my shorthand? i make up my shorthand as i go, leaving out all the vowels and sort, so its pretty much impossible to add every word in the dictionary to the FF database. plus it would still bother me in facebook, and myspace. for example the words "facebook, myspace, and lol" are considerred mistakes. the thing with ignoring them is that underlying words in my notes give attention to them when the necessarily dont.

Whoa whoa whoa... Hold on here.

The built in spell checker doesn't doesn't correct anything, it just underlines mispellings.

Anytime you have something correcting something, it is probably a RTF box or something else server side.

If you don't want to be told you're not using proper English, you can turn it off:

Tools->Options->Advanced->General(tab)->Check my spelling as I type

umm kay plps kthnx bia

I know you said that wasn't the issue, but you mentioned it so it must bother you. So, I thought I'd let you know the one that will be in Firefox 3 is much better. Still not great, but it's an improvement. It's already in the nighly builds.

Umm just right click in the text box and 'uncheck' "Spell check this field".

Ta da

You can turn it on or off for any input field you want and it persists even after restarts.

people, first off thanks for the feedback, and taking the time to help me out here.

what i was reffering to was that when i type up shorthand notes, i want to stress some important points on the page. Like stuff that actually might be on a test or imporant definations. Now spell check comes along and underlines all my "mistakes" which arent mistakes, just not in english or maybe written in shorthand. i just wanted something that would allow me to disable spell check on CERTAIN websites. if anything ill just disable it all together.

LMAO I LOVE YOU GUYS.

i cant believe i never saw that! will it remember this site all the time? lol

edit: aww shucks. Google Docs has its own "right click" menu. i cant see any options. but i guess it should prevent other sites. if another workaround comes up please post :)

yeah it will remember it all the time. I'm not sure about the whole site but maybe just the current page. There is another way or doing it but I'm enlisting outside help to remember the correct code right now.
