Netscape Navigator 9

Recommended Posts

Does anyone use this? I noticed on the Netscape site, that it said this:

Mozilla and Firefox are registered trademarks of the Mozilla Foundation.

and the installer had something about Firefox and Mozilla

So i got bored and installed it on the college computers, one of things i noticed is that it seems to be faster then firefox with loading web pages

It is exactly the same, but I do like the look of the default theme :)

Is there any way to get this theme for firefox beta 3?

Downloaded, installed and tested it in OS X and I like it, better look than firefox 2. Very interesting weather bar on the bottom, Good performance!
Mmm... I don't see how it could be faster than FX2 if IT'S FX2...

"Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11pre) Gecko/20071206 Firefox/2.0.0.11 Navigator/9.0.0.5"

The Weather extension is there: http://weather.weatherbug.com/labs/firefox...-extension.html

I still don't understand why Netscape just Re-Branded FX2 and release it by themself...

Well I don't said that is faster, I said that the theme looks better than firefox 2. Well Mozilla Firefox is open source, which mean anyone probably can use the firefox engine and rename to whatever name and theme you want. Maybe Netscape bought some-kind of license or rights to use the engine, I maybe wrong.

Netscape (the original company) created Gecko, Mozilla (now SeaMonkey) was basically a open-source version of Navigator. The new Netscape is just a new start on the Firefox (a slimmed down version of Mozilla/Navigator) codebase.

Let me get this straight..Netscape Navigator is not the same as Firefox 2. NOT.

Both of them use the same engine [Gecko], but Netscape has modified the engine to a slight extent, such that it no longer faces memory usage issues.

If you guys are up to it, I can write a review on it.

But I am a little puzzled as to why the installer package had "Mozilla" as the author and not Netscape.

Hum... on what FACTS do you base your theory on?

Okay, maybe I should rephrase it. Netscape Navigator 9 is not a Firefox package. It is BASED ON Firefox' s engine ,Gecko, [and Gecko is based on earlier Netscape Browsers] and I am not aware of any add on for Firefox which overcomes the memory usage problem that Firefox has.

FACT 1:

The original Gecko engine has been altered to overcome the memory usage problem.

FACT 2:

The Navigator 9 is significantly faster than other Gecko based browsers [Flock, Firefox 2.0.0.x, etc.]

FACT 3:

Features not found in Firefox 2.0.0.X but present in the Navigator 9:

- Link Pad

- Side bar - "Mini Browser" [there is an add on for Firefox with similar features, but it is not the same]

- URL Correction

Your Fact One and Two are not FACTs. You cannot conclude on just summary view on your own Computer.

Right here, my tweaked (with about:config: tweaks) Firefox 3 Beta (Witch as been told as using more ram than FX2) is using slightly more RAM than the Netscape Navigator 9 stock. I must have something like 10 addons and 30 Stylish Scripts.

This said, maybe Netscape is better tweaked, but it's not different for more.

Your Fact 3 is irrelevant. They just did add few addons right into the browser and not externally as other extentions.

This is nothing special and don't mean that they redid the core.

If they made any major enhancements to memory usage, it would have worked it's way back into the main source, and last time i checked (last night actually, ended up reading some nice blog posts by devs about the memory allocation) i didn't find any information about it.

Edit: We do have to be thankful to the original Netscape though, it gave us Firefox, Thunderbird, Nvu, SeaMonkey, etc.
