The state of Neowin

Recommended Posts

After reading recent developments about off topic discussions on Neowin, I have to say, Neowin is fast becoming a place for stringently on topic, technological posts only.

In my view off topic discussion is slowly being strangled, both in the scope of topics discussed, and now childish and pointless clamping down on quite frankly "nothing" phrases, such as "i'd hit it".

Seriously, it's starting to feel like you shouldn't post about anything remotely off topic without serious, painstaking consideration, which is not helped by the fact that a certain moderator is "warn-happy" to put it mildly.

At the moment, if I only come to Neowin to make on topic posts about technological discussions, because it's quite frankly unpleasant to come here for anything else. If I want relaxed and fun off topic discussions, Neowin is certainly not the place for them anymore.

I'm disappointed to put it mildly. Neowin has a very "overly restrictive" feel to it these days :(

The moderators are simply trying to keep it clean and not damage there reputations throughout the industry. Neowin is looked at by kids interested in tech, would you want your kid seeing jokes with an adult nature, probably not.

I use neowin for exactly what it was designed to be, A tech site.

im not saying my opinion is right, and id love to see other peoples views, but thats my general feelings.

Neowin always has been and always will be focused on technology, which is even implied in the name. Off topic discussion is still allowed in the correct sections, but Neowin's focus recently has been moved away from being a tech community to a general discussion community.

As for the moderator, I'd advise you to PM them if you have an issue rather than discussing it publicly.

compared to a couple other forms that i go on.....

the quality of posts on Neowin is still a hundred times better

you should see the garbage kids post in other places

it's like they don't know how to read or write

they just walk into topic and post anything, with out even thinking or reading what the topic is about

i've been on Neowin for years and the reason i'm still here is because the quality of posts are just a lot better than a lot of other places i've been

sure you get stupid replies and topics every now and then but they are few and far between imo

and at least the mods actually moderate

i've seen porn ads on other forums sit there for days and weeks with out any mods knowing what's going on

It's the reason I don't post much anymore. ^

I'm all for keeping tech related articles on topic, but if it is in GD who cares.

BTW I think we should steer clear of talking directly about the other post that got locked otherwise this one will too.

And I applaud.

Hopefully Neowin will become a place for thoughtful, meaningful discussion. Threads such as "Post Pictures of your room!" don't help me or anyone else.

Lately I've felt like I'm surrounded by bored teenagers on this board.

There are alot of bored teenagers on this board and as long as they post those pictures in the proper forum what is it hurting?

The point is, when Neowin started, it was a place for people to learn and help each other and, as of late, it seems the entire community has shifted away from that ideology to a more "let's bull**** about everything and crap on threads because we have nothing else to contribute" state. This initiative isn't in place to stifle postings, but, rather, to encourage thought out, mature posts that contribute to the community and bring back the feel this place used to have to it.

Not counting the gaming forums, which tend to be a hot bed, a majority of warnings stem from the non-tech forums Neowin has in place. On top of that, the ability to receive help in the tech forums has fallen drastically. We want to entice knowledgeable visitors to join the community and, to do that, we need to clean up the areas that would otherwise turn away those very same people.

Posts such as "I'd hit it", or "nothing phrases", are worthless. They contribute nothing, quickly steer a topic off course and lower the overall post quality on Neowin. If anyone is going to complain about our desire to filter out that nonsense, I have to question their motives and overall desire to see Neowin, as a tech community, flourish.

the forum seems fine right now... but if your asking; perhaps a few less religion, sexuality, race, etc threads would be nice . . i don't come here to listen to certain people rant on about their close minded views. (perhaps more strict moderation is required)

.... but in general neowin is still a great resource as a technology forum, and will hopefully continue to be

I've no complaints and i've been a long time member. I think the mods do an admirable job given the amount of crap and childish nonsense that goes on around here.

Seemed like a nazi camp when i arrived.

What - 4 weeks ago? You sound like you reeeeally have this place sussed out.

I visit and use Neowin more then any other website, to me its great. I use it mostly for tech and gaming sections but there are other areas I like a lot. I personally don't feel restricted but I don't use the sections your talking about as much as some of you.

Specifically in regards to the Windows help forums, besides members not using the search function and/or google before asking for help (which is a problem of pretty much any forum situation and something that I have honestly done myself in a pinch), I would have to say that the mods are doing their jobs and that the content and availability for help is excellent. Also, I would have to agree that this is primarily a forum for technology-related posts. If you have an issue with the non-technology content/posts, find somewhere else to post. There is nothing wrong with wanting to have a place to BS with people you've met here, but to say that the mods are being too cavalier is just missing the point of Neowin.

I read a vast majority of the postings in the windows section yet hardly do I ever post, mostly because someone else has already provided an adequate answer.

The thing I enjoy about Neowin has been that when I need tech info I can get it, but if I want to goof off I can do that too. I agree there is a time and a place for everything but I just don't agree with some of the restrictions.

I do agree that Neowin is infinitely better than the other forums around and most of that is due to the restriction on the techinical content.

Yes, yes, yes!!! Please, no more posts with just a single emoticon!

I think all non tech posts should stay in the General Section because its just a place like a caf? where you can hang out and chat about whatever to a certain extent.

If Neowin desires only tec topics simply delete non tec forums altogeather.

Having a soapbox, jokes and funnies and a members metropolis will have non serious threads, if the moderators and staff desire to remove topics they deem unfit it is thir perogative. However, it would lead to a very uninteresting place for non tec members here, and im sure there are a few, me being one of them.

If this is what they need to do to make the forum grow in a direction, that is of course their business and i wish them well, i do, although some ppl may think otherwise have neowins best interests at heart.

I dont blame staff for what they do, and to be bluntly honest i think in all Neowin is well moderated, however it would be a shame to lose the non tec discussions and light hearted areas of this community, but i suppose tough decisions do have to be made.
